Hornady 243 58 gr

Went to the range the other day with my Howa Axiom in 243. Shoots pretty good groups for me, but I was really impressed with the way the bullet went through 1/4 plate steel at 200 yds. 58 grain hornady vmax factory ammo. I'm thinking it might not be fur friendly.

What??? It went through 1/4" steel plate? I couldn't get them to penetrate a coyote shoulder. THing would splash on the outside and leave an aweful mess...

I'm with you on the not fur friendly thing though. Regardless of the hit, it usually got messy.

I had exactly the opposite results. It didn't penetrate steel plates, but was actually as fur friendly as a .243 can be.

I shot several coyotes and even bobcats with that bullet from my 788 that did not exit.

Since I got my AR .223 I have been using the 60 gr. hornady v-max with similar results.

If you hit the top or around the edges, you get a messy hole, but otherwise it turns the insides to jelly with no exit the majority of the time.

It's all about speed. In the late years of WWI P.O. Ackley of the Ackley Improved fame conducted a test and found that a 40gr bullet from a 220 Swift can puncture the armor of tank (then) where an AP bullet from a 06' wouldn't.

Yup even the .243 65g vmax will do it in 3/16" steel at 400 yards going 3017 fps in a 6x45.

Bullet jackets vary from lot to lot in alloy content, thickness...explains a lot in how guys get different results.

One thing for sure, a 60g Sierra hP will never go SPLAT!
