Anyone here using Hornady AMAX bullets for hunting? I just got 100 140gr for my 6.5x55 and did not know they were more of a target bullet. Can't return 'em and I have to use them for something. Looking at Central Texas whitetail on down through the food chain.

Also, anybody ever use Ramshot Hunter for 6.5x55 or 25-06?

Thanks for any input guys!!

A lot of the Grendel guys are using the 123 gr. amax for deer with good results. I am reloading for mine but deer season was over when I got my Grendel so will see next year how the 123 amax does. But have read a bunch on the grendel forums and the Amax seems to be holding up. I think the bullet really depends on how fast you are pushing it. Might not be as reliable if pushing it really fast. May have a slight 'splash' effect. I dont know just speculating but I am going to try them in my grendel.

i use the 162amax in my 7 mag and they kill good. i wouldnt use them in heavy bone if i didnt need to but a run of the mill heart lung shot...no worries

The a max is similar to a v max. I shot a few yotes with the 52gr a max in .223. Worked the same. I sectioned one and couldnt really tell any difference.

The 52gr shoots so good in my 223 so i e-mailed hornady, asked them if it's a good coyote bullet, there response was that it was an superb yote bullet, in my testing they blow up even faster than a v-max,so maybe they dont exit?

I have a sniper buddy that hunts deer with them in his .308. They work real well especially at extended ranges. Up close, they blowup pretty badly, though. I also watched him shoot a couple of does with his .260 and the bullets performed perfectly.

I am definitely not a proponent of target bullets for hunting other than varmints, and I tell my friend that all the time. The A-maxes seem to work well though.

I had good success with the 162s from my 7Wizzer...

Exits look like this @ ~600yds

Found one, too. Broadside shot from about the same distance, recovered inside the pelt on offside after busting ribs...

I have been using them for target as well and want to hunt with the same bullet. I was unsure about preformance but was told they work well for hunting also, glad to hear some confirmation. I just makes sense to hunt with what you practice with.

I have two friends that use them on deer and are having great results!....one is shooting a 6.5 X 284 and the other shooting a .243win I am going to be using them in my .308 Tac rifle for deer this year!
Knockemdown, you have shown all the junk talkers that not only does it work well but the bullet preforms perfectly and does not turn into a cheesburger after impact!

I shot a decent sized whitetail this year using a 123gr. Amax out of my .260 at 2957 fps. At 232 yds. I had a pass through and the deer walked about 5 steps and died. I would think the 140gr. Amax's would be just fine.

Without reading through all of posts, I will give my opinion based on experience. I would not hesitate using the A-Max on anything including elk. What I would hesitate doing is going for any shot except a lung hit.

Tony.

I shoot a .243 on the longer shots for P-dogs. Remington action and a 8.5 twist barrel. The 105 Amax hits pretty hard. Pretty good expansion.
