You need a second person, or a third hand, to do this right. Seat a bullet long in your brass and then push it into the chamber with your finger until you feel it touch the lands. Have the second person insert a dowel into the muzzle until it touches the bullet. Mark the dowell with tape or a pencil at the muzzle. Then remove the case and bullet and close the action. Re-insert the dowel until it bottoms on the bolt face. Mark the dowell again at the muzzle. The difference between the two marks on the dowel will be the max OAL for that particular bullet to where it will touch the lands.
