And yeah, shooting your precision varmint rifle till the barrels red hot ain't the smartest thing for long life, but I still believe you can get it hotter than what you can wrap your hand around without causing any negative consequences. Like I said, if it's oiled and it starts to smoke, you're at around 350F and that's as hot as I'll let it get, personally. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes, they would be susceptible to that. Have you ever seen one actually cook off? I haven't, and I've seen some with pretty hot barrels that would take the skin off your hand.




Seen this happen myself. I was doing some gun truck training in Kuwait at an MPRI range and one of the crews the passenger ripped off twenty 30 round magazines (the driver only got off 4) on three round burst just about as fast as he could. During a quick after action review conducted while weapons were kept hot, he had a single round discharge into the ground next to him.

Thats why .308's should have a long shank and barrel so there is room to cut that chamber to a .300 WIN, RUM or even 30-06, trim the crown back a 1/2 and keep on shooting a few hundred more.
 
Just wondered how guys determine when to stop shooting, I have read and done simple tests with temp. The readings said human touch can tolerate 140F but at 150 the sensation of burn comes in and the object will be put down.Using an infra red temperature reader I got the same results with several different individuals. It is amazing how accurate the 140 to 150 rule was.Just cooling a few degrees under 150 make objects tolerable to hold. If a person goes by the "too hot to touch rule" sometimes the sun would have a dog town gun that hot before the first shot.

We took a couple of Steyr SBS's in .308 and shot them until they were really hot to see what would happen. To our surprise, they would shoot as good as when cold at 300 yds.



I agree, Steve. When competing in the southern states in high temps, this can't be helped. You may have to back off your load so that the bolt will still open easy, but the barrel will still be too hot to touch.
I have always tried to carry more than one rifle or take a cooler with me and lay damp rags on the barrel when out prairie doggin. Some people bring the "turkey baster" and shoot cold water down the barrel to cool em off fast.
