Hounds feet

I've used Tuff Foot, and Pad Heal. Do you guys use anything to heal the pads or toughen them up?
When there's no snow we have a tough time with sore feet.

Lots of miles...BTW if you have the chance when buying a pup get one with darker pads. The light/white pads get torn alot eaisier. To bad my best dog has light pads and produces pups with light pads.

Never heard that, but it makes sense. We also have these nasty 3" thorns that are brutal.
Like a friend of mine says, "Run em. They have all summer to recuperate!"
Thanks

I think alot has to do is keeping the weight off of the hound. This summer i kept my hounds a little thinner that i have in the past and really made a diff on keeping feet on.
I bought some stuff at the local farm store. its called rain maker. its triple action hoof moisturizer and conditioner. It has pine tar and otehr stuff and has seemed to help this winter!!
It is made for horses but also works on hounds feet!!

Many moons ago. My Dad used "Blue Lotion" spray, on our sighthounds. Helped, heal their cuts & toughen their pads.

I kennel my hounds on 2b stone and it has made a big difference in the dogs feet. When i first put it in the pen they were real tender when walking on it but quickly toughend to it and we have very little problem with cuts ,etc. The thorns are another problem all together, dont think you can do anything to prevent that .

I try and keep about half of the dogs kennel gravel, the other dirt. Seems to help alot. They like the gravel side especially when wet out. Then when hot they still get a place to dig in the dirt and cool off. Bag balm works great for cut or torn pads. Fastest healing thing we have found yet.

Rain Maker or Hoof Maker?

I think I have heard of Rain Maker.

Vargy,

Have you tried Hoof Maker? I have some that and I know other horse people who swear by Hoof Maker.

Its been a long time since Ive had hounds but theres stuff called coppertox which is used to tread horses hooves works wonders on hounds feet. google coppertox dogs and youll see im not alone in my thinking.

Looks to me like those 2 hounds are ready to put a move on Mr. coyote.
Thanks for the info guys.
We've been running great here for a few days. Perfect snow.

if you are talking about the pic of the 2 hounds and yote on the ice??

Pull up a chair cause its a story!! LOL
I was running hounds in ILL.
The guy i was hunting with had some new land and was full of yotes.
Nancys dad was with me and we had a fresh 6 inches of snow.
With in 5 mins we had one spoted and put hounds on the track.
It was one of those mornings that the hounds could really smell good!!! They hit that track and was glued to it for the next 3 hours.
They were putting a little heat on the yote and he decided to head out of the country.
WE turn a corner and all we could see was white picket plastic fence all over the place!!
I thought oh no right in the middle os a horse farm. I knew my hounds wouldnt bother a horse but didnt know how they would react with 3 hounds screaming after a yote.
Well they blew through the horse farm and no mishaps and bayed up in the next 2 miles.
I could see they were in a junk yard. I knocked on the guys door and told him what was going on and asked about walking in there. He says hell no you cant walk in but you can drive right up to them!! LOL
We drove in and when we got close the yote left dodge in a hurry with 3 hounds still right on him.
They didnt go a mile and bayed up again.
This time was in the middle of a pond on the ice. OH Man that ice looked thin. I was scared to death that we would loose them there on that thin ice. The hounds were my hunter and annie and lynns (Nancys dad) twister hound.
The wouldnt grab that yote on the ice!! It was like they know it was a bad spot.
I took a few pics and walked back to the truck and got 2 more hounds out in hopes that would make the yote run!!
Well those 2 hounds both fight very well and wouldnt go out on the ice.
The yote seen the 2 hounds running around the edge and decided he better get out of town again. The race was on again. This time they run him another 2 miles and had 2 more hounds to worry about.
They caught him in a ditch this time and made short work out of him on dry land.
As i was pulled up it happened to be close to a farm house.A guy was walking out of his door with a rifle. He cut loose on me telling me to get the hounds and yote out of there. We were gathering the hounds up and his dad pulled up packing a pistol.
Now we have 2 guys with guns and they werent being very polit with the way they were handling those guns with all the screaming and stuff they were doing. We were trying to get caught up and get out of there cause they were scaring the heck out of us with the guns.
We had all the hounds caught and loaded and the dead yote tossed on my dog box and was getting in the truck.
The dad decided that he wanted the yote. any other time i would of gave the yote up in a heart beat and thought nothing of it. But these guys had me mad for the way they threaten to shoot our hounds and threating us i told him no!! I said why dont you just call the sherif so he did. I sat right there and waited for him. The sherif was real nice and of course they had the guns put away by then. The sherif told them to never get thier guns out like that again and asked me to give him the yote.
he was just trying to keep peace. we left and got down the road about 2 miles and he turned his lights on and stoped us.
he came walking up and I was thinking now what!!!! LOL He says that where he is bow hunting is full of yotes and wanted us to come over and kill some yotes!!
he also said that he was just trying to get that guy com down is why he told me to give him the yote. I have not hunted there ever again after all that!! It just aint worth it!!

thanks vargy, i was wondering why they were just standing there. that is a good picture. do you ever shoot the coyotes or is it all up to the dogs? i've gone out with some local boy's before, it's a blast watching the dogs do their thing. they mostly run the coyotes like rabbits here, and try to get the coyote with shotguns as they circle.

That's what we do. I wish they WOULD run in circles like a rabbit! Seems like the head out of town most of the time unless you don't push em too hard. Fun as heck.

green I dont shoot at all. I enjoy my hounds working and if i shot i wouldnt be able to get all the hounds out!! if they dont catch it it will be there next time!!
