Hounds

I'm totaly new to hunt with dogs but know a couple people who do. I would like to get hounds at some piont but want to know what i'm buying. I want to barn hunt, coon hunt, coyote with scent hound andwith sight hounds, i would like to hunt fox with dogs. What breed of dog would be good for all of those? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Sounds like you need to spend some time with a good houndsman. For 3 or 4 years before I bought my first hound, I spent Friday nights with 8 or 10 old houndsmen, listening to the hounds run fox and coyotes. I was 19 and the average age of the group was 70. I'd run coyotes for a number of years with them and other groups, as well as, coon hunt with my cousins. From there, I started putting together my pack of hounds from some of the best of the best from proven stock. Some were trained dogs, some were pups. I ended up with a pack of 22 hounds. 4 or 5 were coonhounds for coon hunting, 10 were greyhound, greyhound/wolfhound cross, and greyhound/pitbull crosses for sighthounds, and the remainder were walker foxhounds for coyotes. I believe there was a July hound in there, as well. That doesn't include all the beagles I raised in highschool.

For what you are asking, dogs have been bred for hundreds of years to specialize. Here is a list to answer yours:

Barn hunting - Terriers
Coon hunting - Coonhounds
Coyote Scent - American Foxhound
Sight Hounds - Stags, Greyhounds, Wolfhounds, and an endless amount of crossbreeds.

Warning: Hunting with dogs can be come quite addictive. My dog food bill was quite large, as most houndsmen will tell you. But, the enjoyment is worth every penny.

Hope this helps...

Tony

And I thought those greyhound/pitt crosses we had in the rescue were someones idea of a sick joke. I couldn't imagine why anyone would do that on purpose. Guess you learn something new every day! We still have one of those dogs btw.

Thanks TonyTebbe do you have any specific breeds of coon hounds or fox hounds. From what I've read there are about 6 or 7 breeds of coonhound I've also looked at cur breeds but don't know because most are silent on track. As for for foxhound there are 10 plus breeds of foxhound and crosses. I might be able to talk mom into letting me have terriers though(she dosen't like the barking and would hate the bawls of a hound). This fall I plan on spending as many hours when i'm not farming around houndsmen but i also love deer hunting and small game bird hunting included which my dad is already hooked on so i know we will be getting another bird dog(Goose our last bird dog died the day after the -30 degree weather we should have brought him in terrible mistake). Thanks for the post. As of right now i'm only 15 and live in town with mom and dad lives in packwood which only has 200 people it doesn't show up on some maps some times lol. So no hounds tell im out of college but i will buy some but want to know what i'm buying. Any breeds would be helpful. Thanks.

Are you wanting to coonhunt? If so, I dont thnk any breed is a bit better than the other. There are good and bad in all dogs.

I think it all comes down to what you prefer. Now me, I like an Old fashioned (long ear) Black and Tan. Running a close second is a Plott hound. But right now I currently have walkers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

What i really want to know are the traits of each dog or some dogs that you've used. I've read all kinds of stuff but thats from a breeders page(of course they want there dogs to sound like the best in the world) and from dog breed info pages.they don't really tell how the dogs work or if they have grit. They stuff like silent on track thats pretty plain do they open up when it gets hot or do they speak only when baying. Thats the kind of info im looking for. Thanks.

I don't know about the other guys, but it would take a week for me to share the "traits",of each dog I have owned.
What you are wantin to do is a tall order for any one dog.
In reality, to do all you want to do, you will need at least 10 dogs.
Might be the reason I always run 10 to a dozen. HaHa.

Deer, I'm glad to help when I can, I just misunderstood your ?.
For cats, and bears, I am running right now, one Runnin Walker,(med nose, med voice, but super fast)
One red bone cross female, great lead dog(cold nose runs silent, hold a tree for 24 hours, med fast on track)\
One red cross male, full brother to female lead dog(fast on track, super cold nose, lots of grit, semi silent on track, totaly open, and loud on tree. Will also hold tree over night.
For yotes I have a bunch of dogs,My best decoy dog is a Blue heeler, he is retired, at 12 years old.(no nose,no voice, great control, and all the grit in the world.I have killed 400+ yotes over him.)
Catahoulla stud Spotlight (hot nose, short range, lots of teeth, awesome control)
Catahoulla stud Buckshot, (Hatred of yotes, will run dry ground, blood trail forever, great control. Also runs silent, and bays loud at the catch. Most times kills yote before I get there. Only dog I ever owned that will kill a badger "one out". Also catch a hog ,or wounded deer. Down side, real big, 100#.More hunt than some guys want.
Zipper; Pup out of Spotlight x Black and tan I used to have.
Silent on track, will run dry ground on hogs ,yotes badgers, blood trail any thing. Loud at the catch, lots of teeth. 35 yotes caught, 20 or so "one out", 12 or so badger fights. Good nose, but maybe more dog than some guys need or want.
Jacka$$, no nose, no voice, 100% sight dog, all speed,(40mph), and teeth. He is my catch dog. Little dog 40#, but the heart and teeth of a jaguar. He will over take a yote with a 200 yrd headstart, he rolls the yote, and the Catahoullas build to for the kill.Jack... is all "wheels and teeth. He will fight any thing.(downside; lots of stitches, he will never back up.He has been cut to ribbons many times.
I've tried to give you as honest an idea of my dogs as I can, for the other stuff you want to do, other guys will have to help you.
If you want to see a "slug" of pics, of my dogs on game, send a pm, I will give you the link. All my "current pack ",and a bunch of my past dogs are represented.
Anything else I can help with, just let me know. Duane

One of the best "all-around" coyote dogs I've ever seen was a cross just like this 1/2 Staghound - 1/2 Pitdog. She would hunt everything from jackrabbits to bears.

I have seen them work, and I would like to have one ,or two.
With any breed, its just a matter of "how much dog you want". I want all I can get.

"Breed for go, and stomp for whoa" These are the words I live by when it comes to dogs.I breed for the "baddest dogs I can get, and then train them for what I want."
Am I "Nuts?" Maybe, but I never have a dog quit. I also have the advantage of 7000 acres to run on,and run my dogs at least 4 days a week. When lookin at dogs, be sure of what traits you want, and how much time ,and knowledge you have before you "buy".Many breeds have diff degrees of "hunt".

If any of your guys know of someone who would want one like that, we have the one that we cant really adopt out as a pet. Shes too agressive. Who knows, maybe with an owner that would be more stern she would come around. If not, shes going to get a one way trip to the vets office.
