Houston Area Coyote Hunting

Gentleman,
First, thank you for taking the time to read my post.
I'm new to the Houston, TX area. Moved here in April 2014 from Ohio for a new job. I'm an avid coyote hunter/night caller. Absolutely love it! Been hunting coyote for almost 20 yrs. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to hunt coyotes around here. I don't know anyone else who hunts here. I'm interested in meeting other local hunters as well as being put in touch with local ranchers in the area, or even partnering with someone else to hunt. I have already paid for a couple leases but would like to get in with some ranchers in the area. I always leave ground in better shape than I find it, and am very respectful and mindful of peoples property. If I see trash, it gets picked up. Just the kind of person I am. I normally hunt with my 223, thermal vision scope, FoxPro shockwave, and a decoy. Also have lights and all the other crazy gear we don't really need....but need to have.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum ! Great group of people here I'm sure some will help you.
Good luck with new job & hunting !

Finding land to hunt for free around here is very difficult. You can try the public hunting areas around Huntsville, or some of the wilderness management areas down south. You will need a $48 stamp to hunt these areas and of course they are full of every yahoo from Houston., so crowded during deer season that you might pass 50 hunters setup on your walk in. Your best bet is either a good lease if you can afford it or spending lots of time driving around and knocking on doors. It's very different here vs Ohio because the landowners here have figured out they can make money on hunters.

PA Mic, thank you! Looking fwd to being on this forum. Was turned onto it from a fella on my FoxPro sight.

Whocares, Thank you for the insight.
I bought the licenses, have a couple leases, but want more land to hunt.

Re: Public land....Yes, you're 100% correct. That's why I shy away from it. Also, no one can night hunt SamHouston National Forest. With that many people there, I'm surprised there is any wildlife left! ALL the animals have to be nocturnal I'm assuming. I'll keep looking and spreading the word on the weekends. I'm also looking for places up to a couple hrs away from here. We'll see what turns up! Thanks again

Welcome to the club, you’re in a tuff location to find property to hunt coyotes or hogs, you have to know someone or marry into it [beeep] near. I get some land from time to time via word of mouth and it always the same story, (my uncle has hogs and coyotes all over his place come shoot them and he wants to see all your NV & thermal gear) I show up prepared to take the land owner out one on one and show him a good time and in return get access, and what I get is a bunch of nephews all wanting to kill coyotes cause his uncle said they could, and this is on 35 Acers!

I wish I new a easy way to get access to property around Houston, as it is I get most hunting south west Victoria, & West and hundred miles or so, but the east side toward La has coyotes

The ImpactZone - I hear you loud n clear. I went out on Saturday to a spot where I paid a guy to hunt his land. I simply wanted to just get out of the city and call some dogs. He wanted the coyotes and bobcats taken care of, and has had others try to dispose of them but I guess didn't have much luck. Well, I've never hunted bobcat before...so no luck there (this time).... But, I was on stand 7 minutes and smoked a big male yote at 35 yds. Called him in from about 300 yds across a field. It was approximately a 5 yr old, and over 50lbs. He was a big boy. The landowner called me today and wants me to head over to another property of his this weekend where he says he has tons of bobcats and coyotes that need thinned out. And yes....his boy wants to go with me. It's all good. At least I'm getting to hunt and meet some people. I don't mind if it's just 1 fella that wants to tag along (if he's safe, and doesn't stink). LOL. The plus side is I don't have to pay to hunt his other property. I'm stoked. Going out on Friday night. Will keep you posted if I get anything.

Sowers5 , it was me that sent you here. You will gather much info & get a lot of help here.
Congrats on your 1st Texas kill ! Keep after them & knock on more doors !

Mick

Pa. Mick - thx for the reference. I'm trying to post a pic of my first TX dog but can't figure it out. Will look into more tomorrow and see if it's possible.

Use the search box at top of page . Just type in how to post picture. Use that search box for everything . Years of info stored there .

Alright...I tried to post the pic of my first TX yote. Hopefully it worked. See post above. Going out tomorrow night and am pumped as the property owner is telling me he's overrun by bobcat. Maybe I'll get my first bobcat

You were real close! In photobucket just place your cursor on the picture you want to post and a "gear" appears in upper right hand corner. Place cursor on gear and a drop down menu appears. Choose "share links"; screen changes and you click on last box on list "image codes"; box turns yellow and tells you link has been copied. Just paste that link in message window and you're done:

By the way, congratulations on your success.

Regards,
hm

Then he will want to go do it himself or with his buddies and before you know it, that spot is no good anymore. Definitely hard to find and keep good spots. Even harder in East Texas where the properties are smaller, and there are more people.

I hear ya loud and clear Yellowhammer. This area of TX is crazy how everyone charges to hunt their properties. I'm not going to pay to hunt coyotes. Just not worth it. It's not like I'm trying to shoot whitetail or any other horned species. I just don't get it. Worst part is I've hunted them or a very long time and have a lot of money and time invested. Kind of went crazy with the gear (thermal vision, night vision, callers, etc etc). OOOPS! I'm trying some different avenues of meeting people and will hopefully start to crack open some doors.

Made a trip back to Ohio over the Thanksgiving holiday to see my family. I took my brother out with me to do a little coyote hunting. We harvested 6 coyotes in 1 night. Only recovered 5. Couldn't find the 6th that night. Went back the next afternoon to recover it. Our new Thermal vision is amazing!! We are absolutely amazed at how much more you see with Thermal vs the night vision we used to use.

In 1 stand we took 4 coyotes. Here's how the story goes: Called in 1 male. I shot it at 300 yds. Took me 3 shots but I got him. I called a little more but nothing came in so I walked out in the field to retrieve the coyote (thinking our hunt was over).

As I was putting the drag around the coyotes leg, a few more started challenge calling me. I was like...holy smokes. Here I am 300 yds away from my caller and my brother has my gun. So I dragged the coyote back to where we were set up and starting challenging back. Soon enough 3 coyotes showed up. Then another 2 showed up. All the sudden we had 5 coyotes in the field at 500 yds. After 45 min of going back n forth 2 came in. We popped 1 at 150 yds. As I was on my way out to retrieve the coyote....the other coyotes started challenge calling. So here I am in the middle of the field with my gun, remote, mouth calls, no shooting stick. So, I was like ok. I'm gonna do this old school style. My brother looks over at me and says....."this is nuts". We were both laughing in amazement.

Then I waited a couple minutes and started challenging the other coyotes. After an hr of going back and forth with both the ecaller and my mouth calls we finally had 2 more coyotes come in charging hard. They were clearly pissed and ready to fight! I shot the lead dog at 50 yds and my brother shot the other dog at 200 yds right in the face! Bang/Flop. I might add...he shot him free hand. No shooting sticks. LOL. I asked him if he could do that again please and we both had a good chuckle.

My wife is from Houston and her brother still lives down there. He hunts a lot so I will ask him about hunting places.
