How are the distress sounds made????

What is the process used to record a distress sound? Blue Jay, cowbird, woodpecker, etc. I recall Dave saying that he actually called in a coyote "while" recording his #233 Jackrabbit distress sound. Just got me thinking. Thanks.

It's not hard to get a distress sound out of most prey species without harming them. Some may take drastic measures, but they aren't nessassary. Some animals just won't talk though, and others won't shut up. Just like people I guess. Where the dificulty come in is in the recording. Ambiant noises make most recordings useless. Recording good quality sounds can be very difficult sometimes.

I believe I remember a story from Gerald that he and his dad used to net rabbits at night. Those who would scream little or not at all, were turned loose. Those who screamed to high heaven when held, would be taken back to the recording studio. After a few recordings they would turn them back loose. The number of screamers were few and far between, but when you got one it's all you needed.

This would fall right inline with what Byron is saying about the background noises.

Dang! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif And I just bought a new set of vicegrips and a live catch trap /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif, I was going to get some new and different sounds for the new FX3.... oh well , back to the drawing board. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
However if you want to hear real distress sounds you should hear the family cat when my 3 year old gets a grip on it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Disclamer: I do not encourage or participate in the torcher of animals, unless its my 3 year old and the cat - they will have to work that out on their own. (I know my spelling is horrible) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I have an old tape, I think it's a yellowhammer woodpecker, but might be a cardinal. Anyway, part way through the tape you can hear a guy whisper "OUCH". I guess the bird got him. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Lol , I've also got an old tape, (I think it's a rabbit) and on it in several places you can hear a guy whisper "do it again, do it again". I'll leave it to your imagination what they might be doing. But I do know that old rabbit is really screaming. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You have a very good memory Tony. You recalled that almost verbatim. Byron has got it right too and I know that he is speaking from experience.

Just having a performer is only the begining. There are quite a few variables that can make a recording effort go sour. I believe that many of our competitors have chosen to go with the first and maybe only recording they get regardless of the quality. That was the difference between Dad and many others. He left a number of sounds on the editing room floor that others would have gladly used as their primary calls.

I am jealous to say the least when I hear of others capturing a great sound with minimal effort. I am not saying all of ours were difficult at all. We fell into some sounds easily occasionally also.

But I can tell you there is no money in that business so don't waste your time trying to start your own sound line. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
