How do you hunt jackrabbits?

Walking them up with a 12 ga really helps hone your reflexes and snap-shooting skills. And, it's a ton of fun!

I shoot them with everything from a .243, to a .22 since I don't eat them and shoot them for sport, I try to vary the technique. Everything from spot and stalk to shooting them on the run.

I usually go on a four wheeler until I hit a spot that has alot of rabbits and then I start walking. I use a 17 Hmr, 10/22, and a 204. When you use a 204 theres nothing left to skin and gut /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you walk em up in a hilly area, 90% of the time a jackrabbit will run uphill, with my 10/22 I stay about 40 yards from the base of the hill and walk when they run I shoot at em on the way up the hill.

The last jacks I popped and I do mean popped, was with one of the .223's below. Sitting at the bench. They were so thick in Wyoming I shot several while sitting at the portable bench in a chair. Now that there is how to hunt jacks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

We use shotguns, 12's are fine 2 3/4 no problem unless they are coming right for ya, then you pop them with three rounds of #4 10GA right Jon!!!

Here in the panhandle my nabor {large Farmer} stops by in the spring and dropps off large box 17hmr for my oldest son 13 who drives with 4 wheeler till he spots them. Gets out his shooting sticks and simulates they are coyotes or deer. When he is out of 17hmr gets 223 dads stash and carrys on.The last coupple of years we have really had alot of them.My nabor will no longer let me shoot coyotes on his property as he feels that we are out of ballance out here.I work night so sundays are when I can hunt with my boy and it is not uncommon for us to shoot, well several on sunday evening the farmers out here love it and will pay for ammo

well you have to raise them high to CONFIRM THE KILL, then you drop them and move to the next. if a tree falls in the forrest can you hear it? the same kind of thinking applies here, if you shoot a rabbit & you don't CONFIRM IT to your buddies, did you really get it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
