How do you shoot running coyotes?

If you want a really realistic target to practice your running shots on, get one of the Level III ballistic vests they have for the SWAT mutts and sucker your pooch into going for a ride. Paint a flouresent orange circle on both sides of the vest and toss the afore mentioned pooch out of the truck on a dirt road. A 20-30 pound dog would work best, so my 75 lb Bassett hound is safe, but Skippy, my pound hound is lookin mighty good. Skipppppppy..come on girl, let's go for a ride!

I will admit, I look at my range tables once in a while...You guys call it using the force. I call it practice, practice, practice. Then I use the force.

It works for me.

If you use a mildot scope a handy reference is 6 mils for 90 degrees and running, 4 mils for less than 90 and more than 30 degrees, right on or 1 to 2 mils for less than 30 degrees. This holds true to about 500 meters. YMMV.

Good Question. Only advice I have is to not ever "give up the Yote's Body". What I mean by this is to not aim in front of the body(unless out past 100 yards). When you have the scope on the target, do not try and lead him but rather keep the crosshairs right at the beggining of the chest. This way there is no chance of overleading the dog. Most misses when yotes are on the run is in front of the dog because people feel that they have to lead a running yote. Rember that most calibers for varmints are at least 2800fps. So within a 100 Yards, you put that dot in front of the shoulder, squeeze it off and follow through, there is absolutly no way that yote will out run the bullet to the point where you would fire behind him.. just won't happen.
But remember that most coyotes will end up stopping before they dart off for good. It is a chance you take on whether or not to shoot or to "bark" get him to stop and then shoot... That is why it is called hunting and not Killin.
Good luck huntin
