How does the .243 LBC compare to the .223 & .22-250?

I've been kicking around the idea of building a .243 LBC for my short carry rifle. I currently have a 16" carbine in .223/5.56 that I use, but I've found when called on to take longer shots, the wind can wreak havoc. I'm thinking that with a 55 or 60ish grain bullets, it should get close to .22-250 velocities and really blow the .223 away.

I already have a .243 WSSM, but it is quite heavy and the brass is really expensive. 6.5 brass seems readily available and a lot cheaper.

My rifle specs I have in mind:
16" or 18" BHW barrel 1:9 twist
Carbon Fiber Handguard
standard 3-9x40 scope

Your right about the 55 and 60 grain bullets. But to get to 22-250 velosity you will need a 24 inch barrel. My 24 inch is running a little over 3600 with a 58 gr. Vmax.

I bet that even with an 18" barrel you could still knock the socks off of your 223....

Just out of curiosity, what's the wssm vs 6.5 brass price breakdown look like.. Never priced either..

While I know its not a 6mm Rat, it is VERY similar and there is alot more info on the Rat. Google it and you find alot of information.

I'm just looking for something that provides better ballistics than my .223's (like you stated). I like the .223 for banging steel, benchwork, and plinking because it is cheap to shoot and reload. It's fine for short range, where the majority of my shooting would take place anyway, but I've found over the years that you start pushing it past 150 - 200 yards, throw in 15mph wind or higher, and you start compensating in feet rather than inches. I realize that even with the 6mm, there will still be drift, just not as bad.

As far as price goes, purchasing new is about the same between the WSSM & Grendel/LBC. Where the savings comes into play is purchasing 1x fired. Almost all of my brass is 1x fired. I've found on various forums guys selling it for about half price or less than new. WSSM 1x fired is hard to come by.

Have you given the 6x45 any thought? With it you can use your .223 brass. I hit a coyote with mine with 55 grain noslers at 327 and it knocked the crud out of him. About 10" drop at that range. There was no wind though.

I'm looking for something like this. My question is this just a renamed 6mm ppc if not what are the differences. Can someone give me some good info on this round.

thanks

6x45 is MONEY! I have a 16" carbine and it is very accurate and my load for 70 grain Sierra Matchkings has alot less wind drift then my .223 had with 55 grain Vmax. My 16" barrel pushes 70g. bullets at just under 2800 fps. and makes for a SMACK DOWN on varmints. It's my definition of a easy carrying, light weight varminter.

We have been using 6PPC dies held off the shell holder. There is no change to the shoulder angle, still at 30* The shoulder is moved forward .015 from the parent case, the 6.5 Grendel. We have made brass from 7.62X39, .220 Russion, 6.5 Grendel I have even used some 6PPC Sako brass.

Thanks Rich!

Just checked to see because I did not know but the 6mmDTi cases I checked held 36.0 grains also so they are very similar. I would think with maybe the longer neck of the 243LBC it might handle the heavy's better. I asked because from a 22 inch barrel I am getting 3300 plus or minus with the 70 to75gr bullets so...... two ways to skin the cat.
