How high do you hunt?

Just wondering how high most people go with their tree stands. I hunt almost exclusively from climbers, and when bow hunting usually only go up about 20ft. When gun hunting on cutovers or other open areas I will go to between 30 and 40ft.

I usually don't like to get any higher than 15 feet with a stick and string. Not because of fear of heights but because of poor shot angles. IME if you get up around 18 to 20 feet unless your shooting out to 40 plus yards your going to get marginal hits on game and wound a lot. I should know...I've lost two Pope and Young bucks because of this very reason. With a gun, the sky's the limit.

Usually around 15-18'.Lower than that I get spotted to often.Higher than 20' and the chance of hitting only 1 lung can be a problem.

Me too.
Same here. If I need to go higher to prevent getting skylined I will, I just don't care for the heights like I use to

. I don't like the fall or the landing from that height. Been there, got the bills to prove it

18-25' for me depending on cover.

Oh yea, won't go up a tree without one. Unfortunately for me, I fell off an extension ladder onto a concrete floor with nothing to tie off to.

I always wear a harness. Up until about 10 years ago I never did though. But I don't have it attached to tree when climbing. Just doesnt work well lik that.

Mine are all 12-18ft in the air. Most are the 12-15ft. But I do have 2 that are in the 18ft range from the base of the tree but ended up being only 10ft off the top of the bank.

If I put down more than a bowl it's just not safe for me to handle archery equipment. Well, that's what the judge decided...

Somebody had to...

Oh...about the highest I've been in a Climber was around 20-25 feet since it was on a hill side and I was needing to get higher because of the Deer in the Ridge Field were eye-level coming off the field down into the woods and logging road. For the most part I feel I need to only get 10-15 feet off the ground and just have good cover to conceal me and any movement,my ladder stands are 15 or 17 feet high and that's plenty high enough for me to feel comfortable about the shot and safety!

It really depends on the terrain and trees available in your area. In KS, we don't have too many really tall trees, and it's a crap shoot whether you trust a hollow cottonwood (one of our few common tall tree species). Hanging yourself 30ft high in a hedge tree doesn't make sense, as you won't find many of them that tall, nor with heavy enough masts to hold you up there, and if you did, you wouldn't be able to see the ground for all of the limbs.

I've had stands that were 10ft high, and some that were 30+. I hung one last year that was at the bottom of a ravine, but if you climbed high enough, would put you about 25ft over-looking a heavily traveled trail. 40ft climb to get 25ft above my target.

On average I like to be above 15ft where possible.
