How important is case length ??

If your trimmer setup has a margin of error of
+/- .005, it's time to upgrade.

I use an RCBS setup on my power drill, and get within +/- .001 or .002.

It makes me wonder why in hell SAAMI bothers to publish their data if none of the manufacturers are adhering to it. I recently measured 11 different rifles to determine maximum cartridge OAL for the different bullets I use. It was rare that I could even reach the lands of my rifles. Now I understand Sinclair is saying that even the case lengths are no longer valid. We could be trimming our cases about .050" short and not even know it. Turn the rifle building back over to machinists and get the lawyers the hell out of it.
It's geting discouraging. Best wishes.

Jack, now that I think about it your probally right..004 is close considering the crude way of measuring.I guess Im lazy among other things. As far consistant lenght when trimming,1 or 2 thou is normal when not trying. When working up loads I try to eliminate all possible varibles and keep the trim length consistant. It may not make a diffrence but I feel that I did all I could. If you have .020 more brass gripping the bullet would'nt that change the bullet release from case to case changing point of impact?OK,nevermind.Sometimes Im guilty of trying to think too much.
Chambers do vary alot among gunmakers.I load for a friend that I had to grind the top of the shell holder down in order to get the brass to chamber.Tight,yes.Die all the way down and then some and the bolt was still hard to close.I just could'nt push the shoulder back far enough to fit his chamber.
Mike,If you want to reduce trimming go with the Ackley. My 250 only stretches .002 or less with each firing. So far the throat is holding up well.I've only got 300 or so rounds through it because Im planning on not building another coyote rifle in my lifetime. No prarie dogs for this boy.
DAA,that looked more like a paramecium than a fly. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
