how loud should I broadcast?

Just goes to show ya.
#1 - There is more than one way to skin a cat.
#2 - There are no hard and fast rules concerning volume.
#3 - Coyotes don't get all caught up in Internet discussions. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The best way to find out if the volume does indead bother the coyotes is call one in on low volume then crank it up and see what way it goes..
I've called them in at home and other places with full volume, they don't seem to mind and it dose'nt bother the red fox much either. Like others said there is no right way or wrong way so what ever way works by all means do it.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Jerry, I will try to answer some of your questions.

Most of the time we have a shotgun and a rifle on each stand or we have two shotgun shooters so we don't try to slow down the hard chargers. Since I got my FX5 with the remote and I do use a rifle by myself, I will mute the call or use Vole Squeaks at volume 20 to stop the coyotes for the rifle shot. Vole Squeaks at volume 20 is my #1 preset.

I would say we kill about 65% to 80% of the coyotes we call in. Some days are better than that and some days are worse.

Tha areas I hunt don't get much rainfall I think the yearly average is 6". We have been in drought conditions for 3 years and now the 4th year was just average. The critter population varys aroud here because of the lack of rainfall. Last season 07/08 there were coyotes everywhere, the 08/09 season there were very few coyotes. So I went from my best season ever to my worst season ever for calling coyotes.

Last year was a horrible year for coyotes around here during the new moon but any other time it was alright . this year has been a great year for calling coyotes .
whatever works is the plain truth . I nor Bob is trying to misinform anyone . just seems to work for us .
I guide rookies as well as experienced hunters . What I do is ill woof the yote at a 100 he will usually stop by 75 and the ol rook oughta kill him . now that dont always happen but it seems if i let a yote get up close on rookie it heightens their nervousness . A man oughtta be able to kill one from 75 easy . . sometimes were the champ sometimes the chump .
For me the volume has not bothered cats or dogs .

Bob , thanks for the reply , Yeah pretty much what i figured way to many variables with weather and food supply . year from year it just seems to be either great or horrible . two years ago we had Parvo come thru my home area and it was hard to call a coyote around the house . never saw one YOY all season long.
I think im figuring out why we use such diffrent calling techniques .
I hunt mostly sage brush areas I.E. rolling hills and canyons with alot of cover .
when a coyote comes in to my calling , im lucky to see it 100 yards out , kill most at 70 or less .
From what i have seen in your pics( just a guess here from what i have seen ) you guys call more open stuff .
Clay do you do most all your calling at night. out of that elevated hunting wagon ?
are your contests night hunts or both day and night?
I know most texas guys hunt at night dont they?
If so that would explain alot for our diffrent techniques.

I also wonder how "loud" loud is, with different callers. I'm using a PM-4 and minimum seems fairly loud. Is the PM-4 consdered typical, high-volume or are there callers that are much louder?
I don't have enough experience with different calls to know that.

Jerry you are correct alot of us that do call loud do hunt in more open areas. But another thing you need to look at is ground with alot of cover will also muffle youre sound. I do a little calling around corn fields from time to time and the corn really knocks the volume down. You can keep calling the way you like but you should give calling with more volume a try, i think you are missing out on a few by not calling loud..

TA LOL. I dont think so! 1 just went accross the road a buddy of mine has a tripple too close to the house for his comfort , i sat up and with volume on 15 on the fury called in a killed a dry female ( babysitter) in 11 minutes . she came in nice and slow , i muted the caller squeaked two times and she came to 20 yrds and i put her down DRT. chest shot . I like em to come in hunting not running .The other two will wait for another day , spring time is a busy time here around the house . The ground i call does not soak up sound , its sage brush not timber, but yes i know what you mean . J.

this year i hunted 3 daylight only hunts . the graham hunt is a 24 hour hunt starting from 12 noon to 12 noon . so i get a lil of both . I tell ya one thing i started doin this year is hunting at night out of a mobile rest chair . we have a couple of those battery jump start deals that is a 650 amp and you can run about half a night with a spotlight . What i do is drop my partner off then ill go park the truck away from my spot the go back and make the call . that way there is no worry of glare off the pickup . worked really great this year .
If Im guiding i usually use that hunting rack . its easier to get a novice hunter a kill in the night than the day .
. here we usually have privy to a good open spot and elevation but here broomweeds take the place of sage . not to bad this year but last year they were horrible . . if im hunting south of here i get into the live oaks and to the west cedars are a problem . we do use a scatter gun then . hard to get a critter in the scope when hes underneath ya . lol .

thank you for everyone that posted. I just now got back here and figured out how to get back the post.

I took my first yote the other day. but not the way I wanted to. called her with the truck horn, and got her with a heavy chevy. double taped it (both passenger tires). seriously I didnt want to hit the little lady but she darted across 4 lanes of traffic and I tried to avoid her but she doubled back.

when I circled back to look at her, I seen about 5 turkeys about 20 yds over the guard rail. i would say she was looking for supper. she weighed about as much as a 20lbs dumbell so thats what I am calling it. hopefully next time it will be on the business end of my .223 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
