How Many Use Antler?

When you use antler, what age, condition, size, etc. do you look for when choosing your materials?

Do you have trouble finding enough antler for your calls?

The reason I ask is that I have lots of antlers & thought they may make nice custom calls.

I was also wondering about agerita wood. I know when you cut it freash it's a nice, bright yellow. Does it stay that color when cured? If so, it would make some nice calls.

Thanks

Barry

antler over a year is nice. if i dremel under 6 month's the antler dust will be moist. and stink. i nice i work with all kind's of horn and antler. i spend over $2000.00 a year easy. the whitetail is expensive ad's up fast on weight. i buy alot for the fall then i make the money back. dont know about the wood.Rick

brown horn not chalky is good.

the axis, pere David's Deer, couse deer. is a little hard mainly expensive. and blackbuck horn around $100.00 for one horn.

Where are you located in New Mexico? I will be in Ruidoso this weekend, I would like to try some of that algerita wood to see what it is like.

I use antler nearly exclusively. The availablitiy of good material is a major concern to me and I am typically running short.

I prefer to use fresh antler, but have had good results with some aged material.

Chalky antler is no good for me although some others may be able to use it.

Are you looking to trade or sell what you have?

I was just taking stock of the antler pile I have on hand...
Elk, mulie, whitetail, and some blackbuck & oryx horns....

Looks like I have the stuff to keep someone busy for awhile.

The elk is mostly brownish, but cured.
the deer is the same with the exception of some white antler I picked up recently while coyote hunting. Hard, but white, (not chalky) & pretty good diameter stuff.

Dogcatcher, I'm South of Ruidoso. There's good algerita towards Capitan from Ruidoso. Some of it is pretty thick at the bottom portion of the bush....6" or so for a couple of feet in some cases.
I think you can cure it, then cut it to keep the yellow, but, I think once you turn it, it needs to be sealed pretty quick, or you lose some color.
It would be a good experiment. This time of year when you cut it, it's nearly florescent in color.

Let me get some pics made of what antler/horn, I have.
If would help you guys out, I'd send some out.
Not really needing the money, might make me a call or something if you have the time. I'm not worried about it.
Just pass on the favor. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'll post pics, with numbers on them, you guys can pick what you need.

Just thought it may help with your stock for building. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

That's all I have in front of me now.

On the Elk antlers, if someone could make my wife/calling partner a call, it would be appreciated. Doesn't even have to be solid antler or anything. I just always try to make sure she smiles a lot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif (Not mandatory, by any means to get the antlers.)

Thanks for looking.
