How much caller to buy?

I am new to calling and wanting to get most of my equipment before the oct 15 opening day here in IN. I still need to get a electronic caller and a set of binos. I'm on a limited budget and have about $300 to get these. I have been looking at the Power Dog ($130+tax local)and the PM4($190 plus shipping) for a little bit more $$. But I have seen these calls from Cass Creek that are small and much cheaper under $50. This would allow me to buy a better set of binos too. Are they any good at all or should I just avoid them all together? Is the PM4 any better than the Power Dog. How about the ones from Western Rivers? Maybe a home made elctronic? I know I should buy better but the budget is topped out at this point. Ive been watching the clasifieds but not seen anything I can afford yet.
I've picked up a couple hand calls and have realized I could not even call in a stupid deaf coyoye with them so I feel an electronic call is the way to go for me.

Thanks

You wont be happy with the cass creek

Id get the PM4 over the power dogg.

The only WR call I would want to try is the nite stalker and it is way out of the price you are looking at.

Id go with the PM4 from allpredatorcalls.com

If you decide to go with the power dogg, please keep us posted on your time afield. I dont think there has been much posted on them yet.

Mudcat, if I was new I would probably go with a good enclosed or open reed custom call from one of the maker's here first. Then if I liked calling (which I'm sure you will) I would then buy a ec. A good pair of bino's will cost you at least $300 or perhaps a little more. Welcome to the forum!!

Buy the best you can. You won't be happy with a cheap-o, and you'll end up buying another one, spending way more in the end, and going through alot of frustration. Much better to get a pair of "temporary" $50 binocs in my opinion, because you're going to want a good pair of those too, and they ain't cheap either!

If the binoculars are for predator hunting don't buy them. Spend all your money on a good used call. There are plenty of $500.00 to $700.00 used callers that will be selling for under $400.00.

Binos will be used pretty much just for hunting. I have a set of compact binos that I have used for deer hunting that I probably could use for a while.
I bought a Primos pack of 2 calls the hot dog and the kiyi or something like that and it came with a dvd. DVD is great but my calling leaves a lot to be desired.

Hey Mudcat if you feel you need an e caller that is not too expensive, you should really consider an older or even a refurbished Foxpro. Foxpro has a website where they sell these units for around a hundred bucks and you can get it programmed with your choice of sounds.Thats what I would do if on a tight budget and you can always sell it and upgrade later if you want to without investing a lot of money up front. In the meantime, you still have a decent caller that will bring in the coyotes.

Mudcat,

I'd get at least a 416 FoxPro.

If I were you for the money you have, I'd get an FX3 & save some more for binoculars... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I will hold out for a while to see if I can come up with some $$ and maybe get the XR6. If not I will just go ahead and go with the PDog or PM4. I really think the remote would be a big plus especialy hunting alone.

something to think about, I just bought a pair of 10x42 alpin bino's. They are very inexpensive, around 100-150 on ebay and I like them better than my steiners....they get great reviews and were F&S's value pick for optics.

I bought an fx-3 refurb from foxpro, it was around 350 and I could not be happier, I have spent two years doing the el-cheapo..cass creek....and other various lower priced callers then went hunting with a guy who had a foxpro and the difference is unbeleivable.

Do yourself a favor and buy a foxpro or minaska...and check out the alpins...you will be glad you did.

XR6 from allpredatorcalls.com $299

Bushnell Trophy Bino (camo) 10x27 $79 from Cabelas.

Problems solved, only an extra $80 more then your allowance.

I carry the 10x27 Bushnell Trophys and love them. Light weight, fit in the console of the car or easily in a pack...

Good Luck.

Thanks for the reports on the binos those were some that I had looked at while at Gander the other day. I ordered them today, based on the reports from you guys and from actually getting to look through them in the store.

Still up in the air about a caller been checking the clasifieds at several places. I guess I may bite the bullet and buy from allpredatorcalls, that way it will come programed with sounds already. I am somewhat puter stupid and may have a hard time figuring it out.

I will say this. If you have something in mind that you want but think you can't afford it now, then WAIT!!!!

Don't make the same mistake a bunch of us have and start buying calls because that's what we could afford at the time and it ends up being a pile of crap.

Hold out until you get what you really want..

Good choice on the binos...

What part of IN are you? If you're near E'ville I've got some calls you could lay with to help you decide:
RadioShak amp and horn for MP3 or CD player.
Minaska Amp with Nady wireless for MP3 or CD.
WesternRivers Predation.
Minaska M1 Bandit (1rst Generation).

If you're in Southern Indiana shoot me a PM and we can goto the range and try them out.

peace.
