we use a johnny stewart electronic caller and i was wondering how much we should be calling??? a little now and then or alot steady?? any info would be a huge help. we are still looking for our first dog.
It depends on the tapes your using. A tape such as coyote killing a deer should only be run a few minutes at a time about five minutes apart.Canine distress sounds such as canine puppies or fox distress should be run continuously.
Think about what it would sound like in reality. How long does it take a coyote to kill a fawn? How long would a rabbit keep screaming hunng in the fence? Be willing to experiment and fool around wiht them a bit. Learn what works for you. Jimmie
A general rule of thumb is to start out with a lower volume call for a short duration (30-40 seconds) and wait. This may get you the occasional animal that is real close. Then go to the louder volume for a minute or two and wait. You can vary the call lengths and volume a lot of different ways but I would stick with the short low volume at the start of every setup. It is also nice to have a dog come in that has not pin pointed the noise but looking around.
From what I have saw in videos Like the Coyote Gods, they say to leave it on all the time. This is supposed to Keep the coyote from useing it's sense of smell as much. And alot of times they don't circle downwind to smell where it's at because they know where the sound is coming from, they wil come right to the source of the sound. So it would be a good idea to put the speaker away from you.
