How powerful is the coyote's sense of smell?

This may be a dumb question. But, can a coyote smell the CLP that I use on my AR-15? I also have a Mini-14 that has a camo spray paint job. It has a distinct smell to it. Can they smell that?

I try to use the wind to my advantage. But, I am curious how sensitive their sense of smell is?

Just multiply a deers sense of smell times 10.Coyotes have a very good nose.
Like guess said,"kill'em before they smell you".

A good example is this:

You walk into a restuarant and smell a great steak cooking. A coyote can tell you what the steer had for its last meal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I was at an oil industry trade show one time and there was an outfit that had dogs (black labs I think) that could smell a gas pipeline leak. They claimed you could put some chemical through an underground pipeline that the dogs were very sensitive to, and the dogs would find a leak by walking the ground above it.PC

I have seen said, and I like this analogy. You walk into McDonalds and you can smell a big mac, a coyote smells 2 all beef patties special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickels, onions on sesame seed bun.

J.Holly,
I love the example, I have never thought of it that way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I ws watching a program on Animal Planet the other day about wolves and Coyotes and the guy that was narrating the show said that they can smell 1000 times better than people.
So yes, I think they can smell your gun plus the powder pushing the bullet. Muleyboy

Guess said it all. Kill 'em before they get down wind. If you think all the scent block clothing is going to fool them you're dreamin'. I do put effort not to smell by using scent free soap and antipersperant, but I don't try to make myself disappear becouse I know it's not possible. My dad has a friend that sums it up pretty good."You could cover yourself in cow manure and they'd smell a man covered in cow manure."

I think that everybody agrees that their sense of smell is superior and they can smell you regardless of what you do but do they even realize what they are smelling and does it concern them? I can think of many times on calm days when they have been just yards away looking for me and I have on my standard Pall Mall and PBR cover scent. Not saying that more have not been scared away that I have not seen just that they may not recognize the odor all the time.

yup, all these guys summed it up! But one more thing to think about is, how much human interaction or human smells do these coyotes deal with? I my neck of the woods where we have fairly large populations of people and smaller wood lots, I would think that SOME smells are just passed off as "everyday smells" to coyotes but others sppok them. I think they can tell the difference...
