how rare are gray foxes ino your area

We use to have alot of reds and no grays.Shot my first grays 25 years ago.Now grays are common and reds are far less.The Grays are very agressive and run the reds out.

Do you also have more coyotes now than you used to?
 
See a good mixture of reds and grays in my area. No telling whats going to come into the call. I have noticed that the places i hunt that have coyotes you usually don't call in many fox.
 
In Georgia, We have tons of Grey's and very few Red's. We only had 5 Reds come to the scales on our annual predator hunt in the last 3 years!

Fair mix of stuff around here. Some places I call have reds, greys, coyotes, coon, and bobcat. Some areas that are more farm land seem to see more reds, coons, and coyotes. The areas that have small fields with good wood lots tend to get more greys. They seem to like the thickets more. I rarely call reds, greys and coyotes seem to like what I play more. I never trap any greys though since my trapping areas are pasture and corn stubble, all I get is reds.

GC,To answer your question,no. The coyote population is probably less now do to all the cursed wolves.The red fox here are very elusive.I use to trap alot of them,while rarely ever seeing one not in a trap.I have called in many a red in N.W. mn. and N.D. but have never called in a red here exept 2 at night that I didnt get.I figured the fox were afraid of getting killed by a coyote.I have had them torn to shreds by coyotes in traps.Coyotes are much harder to call here now because of wolves for the same reason.Ive had years I have seen more wolves than coyotes.Did I say I hate wolves,Cause I hate wolves.Gray fox can climb trees so have a big advantage,Plus they are one tough nasty tempered fox.Dont be fooled by thier sweet look.
 
Grays tend to be forest animals while reds prefer more open areas. Despite being smaller, grays are more aggressive and push reds out of areas in which they overap. I can see more reds in one afternoon on the golf course in town than I would see in 3 seasons of hunting around here.
