How steep will a coyote climb to you?

I was wondering how far up a coyote will climb up to a call. There is a lot of deep draws around here and was wondering how steep they are willing to go?
 
Interesting question, I never paid to much attention to coyotes going up a steep hill for some food. I'd bet if he were really hungry, he'd find a way to climb a ladder or even a cliff to eat. Now a cat is a different story. Calling a cat out of a steep canyon is not an easy task. I'm sure it can be done but I've never seen it. I've even asked guys in the CVCA if they have ever called cats out of steep canyons and they all said no.
 
I had never considered that until this year. I was hunting some pretty thick mountain country in September, and I set up on the top of a plateau in a clearing watching some easy sloping trails that I expected the critters to be using. I looked behind me and there was a yote peeking over the ridge. A load of buckshot put him down. Curious, I looked over the edge and saw that the trail he came up was almost a straight up climb, strewn with boulders and blowdowns. I could not understand why a coyote would come up that for a little rabbit, but he did.

Howdy ,Utahfoxhunter, I can tell you that a coyote will ,if all conditions are right ,climb up the rock your sitting on . The problem is getting them in your scope at 4' .I have even had them jump on me .It's the ones that get you from behind that give you a " charge ." One grabbed my foot , after he was shot . That was a real jolt .I have watched them come for over 1000 yd's , up steep canyons , close enough to shake hands . So to answer your question , when conditions are right , if they can climb it , they will .Good huntin--Tom
 
If you have them coming to your call on a bee line for you, they will climb an almost vertical incline to get to your call. I have had them come up the sides of small clay buttes in western North Dakota. The slope was maybe 75º or better and it was around 150 feet from the bottom where the coyote started up the butte to the end of my gun barrel. My calling partner and I had set up on the top of this little butte and made the mistake of setting up a ways back off the edge. We could not see right below us and the coyote was coming on the run. We didn't get him lined up to take the shot before he disappeared below us. The next time we saw him he was about 10 feet in front of us. I don't know who was the most excited--the coyote or the two of us!!! I did manage to dump him when he hit the bottom of the butte and started running away. My heart still pounds pretty fast today just thinking about that situation.
 
I shot a dog today in pretty steep terrain. He didn't hesitate to climb up the other side to see where that rabbit was.

Had one rappel down a 200 foot cliff. I was impressed, didn't know they could do that without opposable thumbs.

I've only had one go up a cliff like that, and he ran out of pitons half way up, but I barked him to a stop on his descent and took him at 25 yards (elevation). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
They will come up some steep hills to get to the call. I had a frind take me to an area to do some calling he set me up on top of a cliff that was at least one hundred and fifty feet above the valley floor. Thinking this was a waist of time I did not pay much attention and started to day dreem. A coyote came about three feet from me and scared the s--t out of me. Just pointed my gun at her and pulled the trigger, you should have seen the hair fly. Funney how a 243 AI will do that.
