well i was looking for a remington action to build a 6.5 leopard, but am having a hard time finding just the action for that, or even a cheap donor rifle. so i was wondering for instanve if i found a sa 308 action, can i take it to a gunsmith and have them ream it to a short mag bolt face

Montana Rifleman Actions

A friend has two Rifles built on Montana actions..
He loves them.
After looking at the link I see that they plan to market a Mini action similar to the Sako L461.
Very interesting!!!

Go check out some pawnshops and look for some old guns and buy the gun for the action. You should be able to sell the parts that you don't use.

I realize it isn't a remington action, but if you are looking for cheap...You can buy a new savage stevens on sale for a little over $300. Sell the barrel for $50 and the stock for $30. The trigger sucks but once you take a file to it, it can turn out just as nice as any custom trigger. Worse case scenario you spend $100 on a timney. Either way you have a brand new action for $250-$350, that there is a surplus of aftermarket barrels, and stocks for, maybe not quite as many as a remington, but it is easier for you to put the barrels on yourself.

I have seen 2 modified Rem 700 bolts both reamed out 1 with a Sako extractor and 1 with an AR15 extractor. So I would think if you get an action in .243 .308 bolt face it could be opened up by a good smith. RR

I usually find Remington 700 from $200-$350 for my builds.

I currently have an extra LA 700 .270 action on hand. I gave $400 for the rifle, included an HS stock and a Leupold VariX II 3-9 and Leupold rings. Since I sold the stock, rings, and scope. I have technically a free 700 LA.

If you shop around, you can find good deals. IF you can find a local hunting/shooting forum, you can do pretty well when PPL need money...

yup-per

There is , in no particular order, Stiller, Surgeon, Lawton, Defiance Machine,
(formerly Phoenix Machine also the founder of Nesika Actions.) Defiance sells
to a lot of the top builders with their name on the action. I would put Defiance,
Stiller and Surgeon on top right now but that is just a hobbiest's opinion.

i seen where midway has savage actions for i think 269.00 and they also sell the wsm bolt faces as well dont know how much coin you wanted to drop in a custom but i think that savage is respected for its accuracy Ron

If you get a savage (or a stevens), you can swap just the bolt head and make it what you want. Parts $50-75 at sharp shooter supply.

Kelbly has probably won more BR matches than all other actions put together.
My favorite action at the moment is the BAT.
With modern CNC and EDM machining most anybody can make a fantastic action. The precision available today was not possible 30 years ago at any price.
