How tough are Nikon scopes????? Might have an issue

I ordered a Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 off of amazon on a whim because I bought some Talley lightweights for my 223 and figured if I have to take the scope off anyway, might as well put a new one on. I got a pretty good price on it from amazon so I figured why not, plus I used their one click purchase feature so it was over before I knew what happened lol. It arrived today and I couldn't believe the packaging they used. They put it in a really long box and stuffed a small piece of packing paper at the end and called it good. I measured it and the scope box had 12"+ of travel inside the shipping box. My question is, can they take a good beating and be OK? The scope box is not damaged, the shipper is not damaged and the scope is still clear with no marks. Just curious what you all think. It probably didn't take a harder hit than rifle recoil would deliever judging by the good contition of the box but still makes you wonder. I have never had a problem with amazon until this time. I am prolly over thinking it but just want to make sure. I bet they can take that kind of abuse but you can never be too sure. Thanks!

My thinking is this:

If the Nikon scope box didn't take a hard enough hit to be damaged, the scope most likely is fine.

Although I do agree that opening that big box & seeing how much it slopped around would raise my pucker factor a bit...

Lol I took it home at lunch break and everything looks fine and seems to function fine. Pretty shocking when you pick up the box at one end and you hear it slam to the bottom on the other end!

Just think the abuse it took on the Chinese junk that floated over here from the Philippines. Then the truck ride from Oakland to the Amazon distribution center. That scope has been taking abuse for 6 months straight probably.

Hah that's a good point! I bet they aren't given any special treatment there. Got it mounted on the gun now and I am pretty pleased with how clear it is. I'll see how it does this weekend.

The scope should be fine, but I wonder myself why Amazon uses such big boxes for such small items. I'm not a tree hugger, but it is a waste of resources when they do that.

as many refubs as i see i don't think they are to tuff, and a friend had an issue that they never fixed.he was a seal sniper so you can blame who you feel was wrong

Thanks for the input everyone! I got it mounted yesterday and took it outside and everything seems to function like it is supposed to. I haven't got to sight it in yet to really see how it does but will work on that this weekend. I am pretty impressed with how clear and sharp the scope is at that price point. Little disappointed in the turret caps being plastic, but I refer back to the price point. Hope it works out!

Not sure why you were ever worried.

I dropped my gun/scope 5 feet onto the frozen ground yesterday. Not sweating it a bit. BTDT.....

Just because Nikon repairs their products and resells them instead of tossing them in the trash like the rest of the companies doesn't make them bad products. That just tells me that all the others are cheaper to toss and replace than they are to repair. Doesn't say much for their products .....

I bought a Prostaff scope used that had the rubber eye piece missing/broken off. Called Nikon and I sent the scope in to get the rubber eye piece on (they would not mail me the rubber eye piece.) Got it back in a new box (box I sent it in was a Priority Mail box) and I have it on one of my loaner rifles and it works fine. Did not cost me a dime. So not bad for a $55 scope lol.

I had a 4-12 Pro Staff on my rifle. It slid sideways off the target where it was standing up leaning on the target. It landed on a rock. But just a sliding fall down, not a free fall drop.
The next shot at 100 yards it was more than 8" off zero. At 100 yards. . I readjusted to zero and it held the adjustment. But I got rid of that scope. I've gone to tac scopes in the hopes they will take normal abuse better. Not Nikon either. Since good tac/ battle scopes can be had for the same price as many many mid level hunting scopes I figure it was the right move. For me anyway.

I can understand your concern. I had my son carry some ammo and a scope ( out of the box) down to my shop. I watched him and just as I was about to say take the scope by itelf he dropped it onto the driveway. Didn't say a thing, just put it back on the ammo boxes and off he went. He came back and said I think I dropped your scope.....I looked at it and the glass and reticle are intact. Haven't mounted it to go to the range yet but that is coming next week. 3 years ago his sling swivel broke and his rifle fell 20 feet landing on hard dirt. I thought for sure that was a broken scope and maybe stock. 1 shot and still dead on. The point I am making is that even Nikon's PROSTAFF Scope's are built to tolerate tough use, was I lucky, absolutely. Defintely could have been two broken scopes not due to any manufacture defect at all.
If you ever have a problem with one of your Nikon Optic's,drop me a note and I'll do my best to help you out.

Thanks for the info! Good to know they will stand behind it if something does happen!

Well that sucks! I had that happen with one of my Vortex scopes but it hit REAL hard. Only knocked it off 2 inch or so right. Might have hit the turret and turned because I just got done sighting it in, the caps were off and I had not reset the turret to zero yet so not sure if it moved or was knocked off. Either way, that one is fine so I am hoping the Nikon is still ok. I'll find out this weekend. Thanks for the info!
