I was wondering if any of you have bought one and had a boyds stock put on it or any stock for that matter, and if so how much can you pick the barreld action for?

The barreled actions cost as much as the Howa Lighting. So just stop buy Wally world and buy the whole gun. Then throw away the cheap stock and get your self a new one from Boyds. I got a JRS clasic from them for mine and love it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Check out there specials and stock pile section. There are some good buys in there.

Did just what you're thinking of as a cabin fever project last winter. I wanted to build a back up prairie dog rifle, maybe save a little money.

Paid $340 for a blue 223 Howa action with the heavy barrel. The dealer wanted $310 for the skinny barrel version. A better haggler than me could have bought it somewhat cheaper, I suppose. Another $105 for the Boyds laminated varmint thumbhole stock with swivels.

My first time doing inlet work on a stock. I just wanted to learn how to do it. Well, now I know, and I'll never do it again. Boyds said they make them 98% drop-in. It took me 12 hours to do the 2%. Another 8 hours or so sanding and finishing, and then I paid a gunsmith to glass bed the action.

My take: If you want a Howa, buy it with a finished stock. Or buy a Weatherby Vanguard. If you want to spend just $450, buy a Savage. Better yet, spend $600 and take your pick.

Howa blue barreled action is $255 for the sporter model. The heavy barrel is $20 extra. That is wholesale price an FFL dealer pays his distributor. It amazes me how gun dealers make a living.

I bought a Howa Lightning package this year. I paid $360 out the door. I believe they have a boyds synthetic stock on them. It came with a cheap 3-9 x 42 on it. It shoots awesome, dime size at 100. I plan on getting a Richards microfit stock later this year. I will be sno-cammoing the other. I did look at Weatherby's site the other day and they have quite a few stocks you can get there too.

Snowshoe-I know exactly where you are coming from. "minor inletting" they say. Not! I will never order anything from Boyd's again. There are too many better options and the stocks aren't that good anyway--2MG

Snowshoe and 2muchgun, What did you guys expect for around $100.00? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif What did you guys buy? Unfinished stocks or VIP stocks? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif The VIP stocks take vary little to finish. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif I know I have bought about 25-30 of them. If you did not want to float the barrel, do some custom work or minor inletting. Then you should have bought a finished stock from them. Then you could have just bolted your action in.

Lights - Mine was VIP. Boyds doesn't sell finished drop in for Howa/Weatherby Vanguard. It may have been an exception, but this one was rough inside and out.

As far as expectations, they told me 98% drop in.

Snowshoe Joe, You must of got a bad one. The VIP's that I have bought have all been real nice and almost ready for finishing.

By the way I see you live in Ottertail County. Did you get any of the wind damage last week? I hope not. My place on Dead Lake got trashed.

Lights - Too bad about your place. Join the crowd. 250 square miles got hit. I came out fine. My brother on the east side of Ottertail was typical. Half of the trees down. Dock, lift and boat totalled. God's grace that few people were hurt and no one died that I know of.
