Howa Mini Action in 223

My new NRA Hunter Magazine came today. One of the stories featured the Howa Mini Action. Looks like a nice bolt rifle. Too bad it doesn't come threaded. Anyone out there have one? They look pretty cool at first glance.

I read a post somewhere from a guy at legacy sports international. He said the mini actions will be out in 2016. I'm not sure if that's 2016 fiscal year, cycle year or whatever they call it. I just heard about them yesterday and I've been looking for a lightweight .204, so I might wait to see one in person.

I've seen some on the market in 223, but they had the gosh awful 10 round clip, and I don't care for that at all. The price is reasonable.

Okay....thanks for the info. The one I saw had the DBM and I just don't care for that one bit.

I was looking at potentially purchasing a .204, i have a .222 and .243 now, seems like a logical choice. If not the .204, i will likely go with a 17Hornet...idk how much necessity i have for the .204 with owning the other 2 calibers already however.

Travis?

Anyways, these little guys intrigue me. Handy little rifles with a good DBM. Proven accuracy on the Howa platform. I like the thought of one with a 3-9x Leupold MK-AR would cover a lot of calling.

have seen or read nothing about a floor plate. where is the information about a floor plate?

the only pictures i have seen are with that ugly long magazine sticking out. that is a no go for me.

The 6.5 Grendel I saw a review on did not meet a standard of accuracy that it would need to stay in my collection. But maybe it will get better with shooting and reloads tailored to it.

Please let us know your thoughts on it after you get it, I am very interested in this.

I certainly will. Apparently none of the big distributors had them in stock so Legacy Sports had to make a call to Japan and have one assembled. Supposed to ship out no later than Wednesday this week.
i went with the standard profile 22" barrel and kryptek highlander camo stock. I really liked that this rifle had a 10rd capacity, will be excellent for upcoming groundhog season.
I will post pics of it and range results as soon as possible in a seperate thread.

I got a standard 22" barreled .223 last fall when they first became available. I have always been a fan of the Howa/Weatherby Vanguard action and love micro actions. The action is nice and smooth and feels of great quality, as I've come to expect from Howa. The trigger was just under 3lbs, so I left it alone. The cheap stock was disappointing. Wish there was something better. This one is pretty flimsy. I put some Talley Lightweight mounts and a Bushnell 4200 2.5-10x40 on it for testing. The only ammo I had handy was some Federal 55gr BT. Groups averaged and .75"-1". I didn't have the best setup for a bench, but that's pretty good at 100yds.

Here's the bad thing. The magazine and bottom "metal" which is mostly plastic. I don't like how far the magazine sticks out. It's ugly and right where I want my hand to be when carrying it. The deal breaker for me was the mag release in the front of the magazine. Terrible design. If you push the gun into sand bags to get steady the mag drops out. This is also and issue while in the field. I inadvertently dropped the mag out several times while shooting from field positions or switching carry hands. This is a shame, because I really like the action and think it could shoot quite well with the right ammo.

As of now, the rifle is for sale. If the mag release was behind the magazine, I'd be keeping it.
