Howling and foxes

If I'm calling in an area where I think I have a good chance at both coyotes and foxes, should I not howl? I know foxes are afraid of coyotes, but will the sound of a howl scare 'em off?

I'm a firm believer in not howling FIRST where there's a chance at a fox. I'll call with distress calls for the first ten minutes and then if nothing shows up I'll howl a couple of times and finish up the stand that way. I get the best of both worlds. Sometimes the coyotes won't respond to a distress call but they will come to the howls. I'd rather kill a fox than a coyote so I don't howl first. But, that's just me.

Even tho i'm not calling for foxes, sometimes i won't howl untill i figured a coyote had time to show up to my distress sounds. After that i will howl. I've had foxes come in before the howl, but never after when calling this way.Another thing, you might be surprised how many more coyotes you can kill by howling after you have used distress sounds. By calling this way you got a chance at either animal. Seems like Mr. Buker, calls somewhat like me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can remember two different occassions where I've called foxes after I've howled in a stand. Of course there were distress cries included but the howls didn't keep them from coming in.

same as randy i'd rather take a fox than coyote. having said that, i will usually throw in a howl or 2 every once in a while just to spice things up. it really depends on what i've found in the area. if the sign dictates i howl, then i howl.
howling is fun and adds another dimension to my calling repetoire but distress sounds are still the bread and butter of most of my calling situations.

i'll start out with distress or grey fox pup, then if nothing shows, use howls. and about half the time, a fox pops out. i dunno. maybe theyre curious. best of luck
