Nice, is that a typical size, I'm ignorant about caracal /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Looks like he got it with a head shot too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

That caracal is huge. I used to have one, a number of years ago, when we raised exotic cats. That one looks twice the size of an average one in the states. Almost cougar sized.

Lochi, do you guys ever call any African Jungle Cats (Felis Chaus)? We had 6 of them in our breeding program. Very neat predator, especially the melanistic ones.

Very nice!

Lochi, that's a huge caracal. Gerhard and I tried to get one's attention, but it didn't pan out. I would have LOVED to call in something like that! Amazing.

How large are they usually? What did that one weigh?

I always pictured them the size of a good bobcat, about thirty pounds but that one looks like it would go well over 50??????

From Lochi's web page:

"Similar to lion, leopard and cheetah, this solitary, powerful, 20 kg cat is simply not compatible with human settlement. Widely acknowledged as enemy number 2 on small stock farms, (only to Black Backed jackal), the robustly built predator finds itself always on the run."

And:

"Did you know?
-Caracals begin feeding on the soft skin inside the thighs and finish the hindquarters, but will not remove the guts like jackal would. If not disturbed, they will return to a kill, but seldom react to bait.
-On eastern Cape farms 50% to 70% of stomachs from hunted caracal contain sheep and goat remains.
-There is an unconfirmed theory that the numbers of caracal are kept low by Black Backed jackal, by killing their kittens.
-Young males disperse up to 200 km from where they are born."

This is a monster caracal /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I have seen leopard that is smaller than this one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I hope this lucky guy made a full mount because he will not shoot one like this again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Congratulations to the lucky guy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Good grief! Look at the size of that thing! If a critter like that dosen't get your blood pumping, it's time to take up knitting. I bet calling Africa is a blast!

Calling in Africa is always fun, you do not know what will be coming to the call next.

Lochi and I did some calling last night on a small game farm. Due to rain and lighting the jackal was not very active but we did call in two.
