Hunt armadillos?

It may not be a "varmint".
It doesn't have fur.
But, I'm curious if anyone here hunts armadillos?
I see them all over southern Ks./northern Okla..
 
they are fun to hunt, especially with my marlin camp 45. There is a good song about it, from robert earl keen, if anyone knows who that is. but there is no value in the "shells" anymore, though i think a few people still eat them.
 
"Possum on a half Shell", as some call them, no I don't eat them.
Varmits, yes they are that & they tear up my yard unless I see them. It is amazing what a good poly-tipped bullet will do to the creatures!
 
Years ago I had a pit bull who loved to hunt them! Not much left after he got finished with one though! I'm not one for just shooting something for target practice but those critters are some of the most destructive pests around these parts. So I usually blast all of them that I see! They have figured out a way to outsmart me though. It never fails that I see one while walking in to call and don't want to shoot because I'm afraid I'll ruin the stand. Then when I leave it is no where to be seen!
 
My Squirrel dog can not resist one. If he smells one, he will track it down hole it up, then dig it out. I shoot everyone I see, just so he won't find them while I am hunting him. I once hit one up the exhaust with a 280 rem and peices were on limbs 10 feet off the ground. I view them as target practice.
 
Those critters have been my favorite target practice since I was a kid. I had an uncle who was an old cowboy, and he once had a good horse step in a dillo hole and throw him and the horse ended up lame for 6 months. So, I was under strict orders to shoot every one I could...He would send me out with his pump .22 and a pocket full of shells and tell me to use all of them.I bet I killed several hundred over the years as a kid.
Never handle them though, they are pretty nasty and do carry leprosy.
 
I never have got the chance to do it but down on the river at my Uncles place we had a dove shoot a few years back. The 'dillers would come out of the tree line/riverbank and work out into the bean field a half dozen or more in sight at any one time. It would have made for some excellent target shooting much like prairie dogs. Shots could range from 30' to as for as you dare. Heck, my nephew and I got about 4 or 5 I think with #8 shot within range of our dove stool. The dillers are still there but a hunting outfit has rights to the land now. Arrrggh!

On I-70; west of Ellsworth, Ks.; which is about mid-way between the east/west borders & only about 80-90 miles from the Ks./Nebr. border! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It seems illegals aren't the only things moving north! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
