As most people that go up against Clay can say, I didn't do well. Hunted in a contest this weekend that Clay entered. Funny thing is I walked right by him on my way to get some food and as I walked by I hear this guy talking so I look over and think to myself "That guy looks and talks just like Clay Reid." I figured there was no way I was competing against The Coyote Man himself so I minded my own business. I couldn't believe how much this guy looked like Clay Reid.....come to find out, it was. I felt pretty dang stupid when I figured out it really was him and I didn't so much as say hey to him.
And for those wondering, my team didn't do worth a crap. I shot a 38 pound coyote with my buddies .224 Valkyrie at about 70 yards and an 18 pound coyote with my 7.62x39. Called in 4 altogether. Tried a head shot on one at 175 yards that wouldn't come any closer and again at around 200 yards and about 5 more times as it ran off. Never did anything but kick dirt on him.
The other one I'm not sure where it went. I had it in my scope and lost it and picked my head up off the gun to see where it was. That's when I look to my right and see a coyote 15 yards away. And this is the crazy part. That stupid thing was standing straight downwind from me. It turned to leave and me moving my gun stopped it. I shot it in the chest and it goes nuts, takes off running so I shoot again and blow both of its front legs almost completely off. It starts rolling around so I jump up and shoot it two more times. For not a very big coyote it was tough as all get out. How the shot to the chest didn't kill it right off, I don't know. It was a tough day of calling. Between the wind, warm temperatures,me missing and tall weeds we didn't hurt the coyote population too bad. We saw just about as many snakes as we did coyotes. The morning was decent but it all went downhill from there.
Sorry I didn't get to meet ya Clay. Hope y'all did better than us. Which honestly wouldn't have been too terribly hard to do. Two out of four ain't bad, but it sure as hell ain't good neither.
