January 17, 2006 - Authorities think a Northwest Ohio man was shot after he was mistaken for a coyote by other hunters.

VAN WERT, Ohio (AP) - A man on a nighttime coyote hunt was shot and killed by another hunter in an apparent accident, authorities said.
Trevor Ellerbrock, 27, of Van Wert, was in a field about 9:38 p.m. on Sunday, trying to attract coyotes by using a recording device that played squealing sounds of a rabbit, authorities said.

Two other hunters in the same area - Troy Clark, 36, of Van Wert and a 15-year-old boy - mistook Ellerbrock for a coyote, according to the Van Wert County Sheriff's Office. One of the them fired a round and shot Ellerbrock in the midsection, the sheriff's office said.

Ellerbrock later died at Van Wert County Hospital. Authorities have not identified the shooter.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the sheriff's office said Monday that the shooting remained under investigation.

Van Wert is about 100 miles southwest of Toledo, near the Ohio-Indiana line.

This is so sad....

I to this day do not see how this can happen! Identify your target before you pull the trigger!
there is absolutely no good excuse!

Sad part is; this is probably another state that allows night hunting, but not the use of a light. Had the guy had a light maybe the shooters would have seen it and realized it wasn't a coyote.

Still, there is no excuse and if the state forbids the use of lights there - The state should be sued by the victims family.
Any more that is the only way to get attention drawn to a government problem.

It has happened here for a while with Deer dogs and I think the dog runners have our state on its knees.

News of this makes me sick & sad! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
There is NO EXCUSE for this to happen!
MAKE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND HAVE A SAFE BACKSTOP BEFORE FIRING A WEAPON!
You can't take a shot back!
I feel for the family of the hunter who was killed and also for the hunters who have to live with this terrible tragedy.

Lights are required when hunting at night here in Ohio. They must be visible for at least 1/4 of a mile. It sounds as though the victim may of not had a light. I don't know for sure though. Anyway it is a tragedy and one that should not of happened.

It is a shame. I'm glad they "require" the use of night lights. We can't hunt period at night light or not.

The darks can do strange things to common shapes. but that is no excuse.

Thanks for clarifying canine.

You be careful out there to if that is close to you.

I don't know what kind of night vision they were using ,but through mine everythings eyes shine including people! AGAIN people need to positively identify the target!

This one hits pretty close to home - a few counties away. I've never seen hunters at night when I go out, but I always use a light. I hope the murderer gets the maximum sentence.

my mother and father in law live in van wert and i cant see this happening very easily bc van wert does not have alot of wooded areas. what is there is basically chopped up into square sections and if you have a 30 acre wood lot in that area you have a large track of woods. what im getting at is its totally flat and you can see for miles. for starters the guy who got shot should of had a light visible for one quarter mile and second if it was dark outside the other two would of been shining a light on him i would think.i wonder which one was using the night vision. i sure dont remember night vision being legal for ohio hunting. either way i can sure make out the difference between a coyote and man. i know things happen but id say theres more too it if truth be known.
