I am sorry if i came across hard!! I just didnt know how your were pointing when you made your post!!
Tha main person here that ruffled most of our feathers is TA17rem
He dont have a clue what he is dealing with if he shoots one of our hounds just to shoot it!!

no offense taken.everyone is entitled to there own way of doing things.you do it your way i do it my way.in the end we're all after the same thing i guess.

This debate again ehh, hmmmmm. Interesting that modern day predator hunters claim the moral highground in the debate (that shouldn't exist to begin with; antis love it, a house divided cannot stand, etc, etc.) So my question is, when Teddy Roosevelt and General Custer coursed coyotes with "staghounds" they weren't "hunting"? When ranchers 100 years ago ran fox, coyotes and other predators with hounds, they weren't "hunting"? You may be right, they would probably call it predator control by "another means" not necesarily call it sport, however in preserving an American tradition and honoring a heritage in a way that doesn't provide our livelihood, it can only be classified as "sport". Isn't predation control the service we offer landowners, ranchers, and the like today for the permission we secure to call/hunt on their land?

Sure we have technology that makes our sport more efficient, entertaining and even more "ethical" to the P.C. crowd, but if it leads us to bastardize a rich heritage, we've missed the point of what we are doing by walking into the field in the first place.

I grew up calling coyotes in Southern Nevada and still love to call them in today, but I also enjoy taking my hounds out and seeing a different type of "sport". If a coyote can outrun or outsmart a pack of good dogs and live to contribute to the breeding pool, our sport will continue. If it can't then the predation control objective has been met and the species will live on without the individual, just as if the V-max hit or missed its mark.

We travel a rocky path calling each others form of sport into question and that is a point well remembered far beyond the frustration we feel from a ruined set.

To each there own i guess.. We have them up north but they don't come down my way and if they did there dogs won't make it home with them.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Nice. I don't run hounds but I do run terriers and decoy with curs. I hope you just shot your mouth off without thinking and don't really believe that. I won't go bashing you too hard but hope you don't live around the areas I hunt or we just might have a problem. I wonder what you'd say when your standing in front of me not safe behind your computer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I have hunted alot of game in my day, using many methods, I will say I prefer some ways over others, but loved every minute of any form of hunting. Boys in this day and age it goes like this. UNITED WE STAND,DIVIDED WE FALL!!!! I never slam any one for the way they choose to hunt, and vote pro every time. Good callers dont just wake up with the ability one morning, no more than a good hound trains itself. I have been privledged enough to hunt with some great predator callers, and have hunted with fenominal hounds, and in both cases hours and hours were comitted to make this happen.

Listen guys - I am sorry that this has turned into a "whats right - whats wrong" debate. I surly did not intend that when I started this post. Unfortunately I did not take the time to sit back and think about what I was saying and how it would be taken by others. When I first heard about these guys, I did not see them as houndsman out hunting (I did not know that people even hunted this way)- I pictured them as a bunch of drinking buddies who were out raising [beeep] because this is how they were described to me. I should not have jumped to this conclusion and probibly should have done a little more research about the subject before I came on here with the somewhat bad attitude that I had at the time. It was not my goal to disrespect you or your way of doing things, but clearly that is what some of you feel I have done. I hope that I have not made enemies out of you because of it.

On a more positive note I feel that I have learned a few valuable things from these postings:
-There are people who hunt for coyote using only hounds and do not carry guns.
-You should not come on here and post things that you are upset about without taking the time to think about how what you have written might come across to the people reading it - as It may not always be the same way that you intended it.
-If you do happen to post something on here that someone feels disrespects them or the way they enjoy thier sport(wether it was intentional or not), you will immediately be made aware of it and many people will take a moment to let you know where you went wrong -- and I appreciate that.

Thanks again guys - hopefully I will talk to you again under better circumstances.

I won't speak for anyone but myself...
The fact that you originally had no idea there were people who hunted with dogs, isn't your fault. I would bet you could ask 100 coyote hunters around this nation & 90% would be just like you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This thread isn't the only one like it on this forum right now.
In the "Predator Hunting" subforum, a few pages back, there is another thread on hunting coyotes with greyhounds.

Since I made my thoughts known on that thread, I will not bore anyone by reiterating what I said, here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
...Other than to say this: If you weren't brought up around this form of hunting, then it will be hard to understand it. And in my view, the houndsmen on this forum do not receive as much respect as they deserve (by most people). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If you wish to see my complete feelings on the subject, feel free to check out the other thread. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Plus, I am always open to personal messages concerning any questions you may have. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Baileydr,I don't know if you are new to hunting or just a new member so I'll give you my .02.If you have permission to call an area,go right back in there an call it.Several people don't realize that just because hounds have run through an area that all the game will no longer stay there.I have called, trapped and ran dogs for about 30yrs now.I know of small sections that we have run coyotes in day after day.I mean back, to back, for several days straight to the point you finally get tired of looking at the same scenery, everyday.Coyote hunting is different than rabbit hunting. It seems like if you kill one there, they will be two,to replace it the next day.Don't let the thought that the dogs have ruined the area, stop you,get right back out there and call it.As far as the opinion of houndsmen just turning the dogs loose and letting them go where ever, that isn't the case with any bunch I have hunted with.If the coyote is getting ready to get in a bad or posted section, they'll be handlers there trying their best to catch their dogs.As far as the argument of run to catch or shoot to kill,I hunt with both. And with Billythekids opinion,I realize it's just that,an opinion.I assume he hasn't ever made a bad hit or had a bullet fail to preform. It doesn't bother me if he doesn't think I have any "class" or not, or what type of houndsman I am.I'm sure PETA has yet another opinion of him.TA17rem,let me suggest to you,you had probably keep your head down.Baileydr, you had a question,so you asked, nothing wrong with that.I don't think you meant any harm,or bad feelings.I don't think you need to apologize for what it turned in to.I think it was more of the other comments that got people hot[with good reason]than your original question.

I dont know what the Minnisota law is about shooting another mans hound , but I know the last fella that did it in Michigan cost himself 10,000.00 dollers, and the Judge said if it ever happened again it would cost him that much more with a year in jail. If he would have shot my hound it wouldnt have cost him any money, but would cost me 15 years to life in prison if ya know what I mean. You shoot a true houndsmens dog you might as well slap his wife, it would probably go better for ya. And yes I call predators almost every day all winter, and sometimes hounds interfear with it, but thats the way it goes. I feel they have as much right to hunt as I do.

I sent Bailey a p.m last night inviting him to go with me sometime since he lived in Michigan as do I. And low and behold I was out running today and met Bailey by chance he lives near where I run all the time. Seemed to be a real nice guy and invited him to go the next time I'm go out and he seemed really intrested in going. Who know's he might like enough to get a couple of his own hounds. Pretty funny how small the world is sometimes. Nice meeting you Bailey.
