Hunting Arizona in August...

OK - I realize I'm asking for alot but..

I will be in Tucson the last week of August for an SCI Board meeting. Any chance of success hunting coyotes and bobcats in the heat? Maybe at night??

I'm going to look for a coupe of outfitters that could guide me for a couple of days....

Too hot for me in August, and Arizona does NOT allow night hunting.

You may be able to find a guide service, but let me tell you, it's gonna be HOT!

It's going to be real hot! Plus you don't want to shoot any cats that time of year the fur is hardly worth anything. Including mounting.

Grizz here,
I've called coyotes in 110 degree heat around the edges of Death valley Ca mid day in August! Normally I won't bother
to call during midday hours when it heats up but when we use to hunt on one of the C.V.C.A competition hunts, we were allways wanting "One more yote to insure a win!" When this has happened, the coyotes came to the call quick.
Usually in heavy cover and the vermin
were close by anyway and curious. I don't think they will come any distance when it's hot, but they will check it out if it's close by.

If I can find a guide willing to give it a shot I think I'm gonna try... Let's face it - any day hunting is better than a day not hunting!!

I guess I could look for a bear hunt as well - the season opens 21 Aug and I would be hunting after the 24th..

I used to live in Las Vegas and worked the bombing ranges in the summer - 105 isn't unbearable.. just drink lots of water..

Actually, I'd trade 105 in dry Arizona for our 90 with 80% humidity!

Your right, it's a dry heat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I've never hunted Arizona but I know alot of hunters who do. Lots and Lots of coyotes and lots of cover. In fact I read something long ago that
stated Arizona has more coyotes than any other state in the union! I think you will do well. Just keep hydrated. Grizz

There's something to that reasoning Grizz. AZ coyotes are tougher than AZ callers for the most part. They don't have air conditioning and they have to eat. Coyotes hunt almost exclusively at night at that time of year, but set up close enough to one who is lounging in the shade and they will come with extreme prejudice. To avoid being blinded by sweat running into your eyes make a few stands VERY early and a couple VERY late. It can be done, but its not for those with weak constitutions.....like me.

However, if I lived in Tucson, I'd pull up my skirt and try to give a guy something besides a convention to remember about his visit here. Andy Hinds would have jumped at the chance.

SCI needs a new event planner. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

It doesn't matter how much water you drink then, You HAVE to have Gatorade then to replace the electrolytes you lose. The heat in Arizona would not deterr me from hunting......But then again, I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack either /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It's not that bad if you stay hydrated! I bought a house out there 2 years ago when my daughter got accepted to the University (go Wildcats) and hunt out there every August when she goes back to school. If you're lucky, you'll have the monsoon rains to make things nice and sticky. I've probably stopped hunting more times because of the lightning storms in the afternoon than the heat. Those storms can be spectacular! Go scouting in the early morning after a night storm and it looks like a freeway of critters have traveled thru the mud. I usually just hunt the mornings..........dawn until 10 in the morning. Use google earth and maps for the right hunting zones. Tucson proper was shotgun only if I recall. Then again, there's always golf and the resort prices during August are a steal! Good luck and good hunting

Go for it. It may be hot here, but the coyotes are still out there. Hunt either early in the morning, or late in the evening. Being monsoon season, you'll probably be rained out in the evening. But that just makes the morning stands even better...

Good luck! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

105° will probably be closer to the night time temps that time of year. We are already heading for the 110s this weekend and that sets in for a while. Ahhh, but it's a DRY heat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

110! I plan on going out there this weekend to get the house cleaned. I was planning on doing some scouting and picture taking. I better bring a bigger ice chest and a smaller camera.
Oh pred hntr if you're out in Tucson during the middle of August (14th -21st) let me know, I'd be glad to come pick you up. It's always nice to have company. I'm no expert on the area or hunting yotes, so no guarantees.
I chickened out meeting up with Andy Hinds because of inexperience and won't let that happen again!

You know it crapshoot! I worked Indian Springs bombing ranges (Nellis AFB) for 4 yrs - they made us come off the range at 120 degrees..........

I hunt Tucson year around for coyotes. Just need to use an extra tall ladder in the summer to get above the heat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. Really, it is not that bad. The dove season starts Sept 1st and thousands of bird hunters will be in the field the week after your SCI meeting. If they can do it, you can do it! Late August the puppies are young and dumb and will come to most anything. I certainly recommend trying it in the morning until about 10:30am.

Right on! im going to be heading down to visit my grandparents in Dolan Springs in mid august and had been wondering if the hunting was any good. they live out in the middle of no where and i was hoping to get at least one day of calling out there!
