Hunting competition with tranquilizer guns

There is a story in this morning's paper about a group of people that are going to sponsor hunting competitions with tranquilizer guns. It is to be something similar to professional Bass Tournaments with professional hunters competing for a $300,000 purse. The hunters will be paired in teams and the hunts will be televised like the BassPro/Nascar fishing show. All kills will be made with tranquilizer guns and the first hunt which will be for deer will be this fall. Three hunts are scheduled for next year. PETA is going nuts as usual. Anybody know anything about this ?
 
I don’t see how this would work. None of the tranquillizers that I’ve heard of will drop an animal in its tracks. They are going to have to be tracked and found, meaning that a large percentage of targeted animals will not be recovered. Tranquillizers are administered by estimated body weight. An over dose will kill the animal. I have an idea that F&G departments will put the squash on this one.
 
Some more info on this: The World Hunting Association organized by a former Detroit real-estate executive has scheduled it's first even to be held at Lost Arrow Ranch in Gladwin, Michigan in October. David Farbman formerly the president and chief executive of the Farbman Group, said it will be shown on the Internet and on pay-per-view television. In the October event eight two-person teams will hunt white-tailed deer in a competition for $300,000 in prize money. The organization has sponsorship agreements with hunting companies that include G-5 Outdoors, Eastman Outdoors Inc, Gorilla Inc, Xtreme Scents and Pneu-Dart. Farbman went on to say it's an attractive demographic with disposable income that would be targeted and could deliver for marketers and sponsors. Thats really the name of the game these days. Hunting is a market that's pretty close and tight-knit, but we want to grow it in the mainstream. We want it to be talked about in the same way as bass fishing or NASCAR. The hunters who will be participating in the WHA are professionals with extensive experience as guides or on telivised hunting programs, Farbman said.
 
Sounds like harrassment of game animals to me - probably illegal. At the very least it borders on unethical and should be protested by honest hunters. Unlike the "green hunts" for animals with low populations (rhino) where the money goes straight back to conservation, this sounds like a money deal, which as stated above only serves to cheapen our sport.
 
I just don't think it will fly? Im with Ram, blatant harrassment of game animals, with the added possibility of death or injury. Reminds me of the big 10K predator hunt that was planned here in Az several years back, which was actually legal, but even it caught such flak it never got off the ground.
I wouldn't support a tranq hunt like this, sounds suspicious and quite frankly stupid to my mind?
 
If they are allowed to use tranq guns, then Higgins should be allowed to use his paint gun. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
I dont really like name calling but, If anyone here wants to lable someone else we should call these guys who are doing the traquelizer hunt a bunch of morons, idiots ,etc.
I think its a bad idea for them to do this type of,ooops I started to say hunt but its more like just a rich mans idiotic game. This hopefully will be stopped before it gets started.

Remember the canned lion shoot that was downloaded on the web some months ago? I would cough up for pay per view to see them do that with tranq guns.

They will get hurt at the very least I bet.

Paintballs would be better than drugging. They could use their footage to score accuracy etc. without endangering the animals health. Still, a stupid idea. If they don't want to take the animal in a quick leathal way they should just use cameras.

As ethical hunters how can we stand by and let these idiots bring our sport into the realm of "Spectator Sport" for cash? Shooting wild animals with tranq guns has got to make this even more absurd!
I say we all contact those who are sponsoring this such as Eastman Outdoors Inc(Carbon Express arrows), Gorilla Inc(tree stands), and Xtreme Scents and tell them how we feel about this... Maybe hunting with dart guns is cool in Detroit but not in my woods!!!

I'm not the kind that normally gets upset about other peoples ideas but this one needs to be put away very quickly before we all get a blackeye!

Yes unfortunately it is for real and it is a very bad idea. Contacting the sponsors and protesting is a good idea and I suggest you contact ESPN . Without the TV involvement this thing want get off the ground. The anti-hunters will have a field day with this. I don't know what the Michigan wildlife people think about it. If there is someone on the board from Michigan they can contact them.
 
Can someone tell me what #!%& is wrong with people!!! and what the #!%& does this have to do with Nascar or Bass Pro This is not the samething its stupid we hunt to eat, and control game population, pervent disease among game and starvation Etc. I guess they call this hunt and release and soon we will all be able to go to Walmart or Dicks and buy a tranq gun and darts. Why do we need a dart sponsor? Unless thats the plan since they don't kill the game peta and cash and all these other animal rights people will be glued to the tv watching and hunting with their tranq guns then they will protest hunt and kill seasons!!!

One of the worst ideas I've heard. Let the sponsors know how you feel, but also the guides they say will compete, and the TV-shows that allow their "stars" to participate in this. Nothing will kill this quicker than bankrupcy to all involved!
