Hunting coyotes with greyhounds.

Let me hear some of you guys thought on this?

for the last two weekend i have rode with some guys who hunt coyotes with greyhounds. to say the least it is a blast. i have never been on more successful hunts, as numbers go. i think of the two times i went we got around 40 coyotes. lots of races! we probably saw near 70 coyotes.

so you know what that means, wheels are turing in my head...... my own greyhounds, hunting wagon, dog box..........oh no /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Not to ruffell feathers...but exactly how is this "hunting"? Sounds more like gang violence of multiple critters chasing an animal....and then ripping it to shreds...that is the image I have of this....am I wrong?

Let me know when the hunting part starts.

I had a friend in the early 70's that used grayhounds and the catch ratio was way good. I haven't been dog hunting since. The wear and tear on equipment to keep up with the dogs and save the hides high also. It sure was a first class rush at the time.I don't think with the price of fur so low that it would even pay the upkeep of the dogs.

Obviously, with those kind of numbers, you guys were into some very coyote rich country.
And I congratulate you/your friends for their success.
I have a lot to say about this subject, but since I only have 5 minutes left that I can use a computer tonight, I'll make a real post of my thoughts later this week. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Here we go!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you don't want to "ruffell" feathers then why post a loaded response? If you have something to say, say it.

Please give us your definition of hunting so that we may live up to your standards and ethics.

Chase some of those coyotes into my part of the country would ya?I would sure appreciate it.Once you get to Beaver or Texas county you can stop and go back. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
J. Holly-I dont run greyhounds either but if people enjoy doing it thats fine by me.I just dont want them doing it in my part of Oklahoma. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
But my point is that maybe the guys that run hounds dont think that making rabbit noises to get coyotes to run to you sounds like much fun either. But of course the guys that say that probably havent tryed it.Same thing can be said about me and their sport.I've never tryed it but it might be a blast.

Jacob,

We have a hound forum on PM where we freely discuss hunting coyotes with hounds. Remarks such as Mr. Holly's will quickly be countered with lively discussion. Such as: If you saw 70 and caught 40 coyotes, the population is obviously at an extremely high level. Taking excess coyotes, be it with dogs, or gun, will likely help in preventing a precipitous drop in population levels due to disease (such as mange).

Believe it or not, there are those of us who truly enjoy watching a hound work. Some may not think it's "sporting" enough for them and they are entitled to their opinion. Hunting dogs with hounds is just as much a sport as coon hunting. I bet some of the naysayers think nothing of walking up under a tree with a pack of coon hounds underneath and gladly shoot the coon out.

I wonder if you caught 40 coyotes in a trap Mr. Holly would consider it "worthy"?

I'll second that.

Hunting with dogs to hunt coyotes isn't my cup of tea but if people like to use the method, go right ahead. I just like more of a challenge at calling them in and having a better chance of the coyote not being ripped up too bad before I get to it.

The idea of using hounds to run coyotes sure does sound tempting to me, but here in Alberta it'd get you a very big fine...can't "harass" wildlife or allow your dog or dogs to do it either...40 coyotes...hmmm /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

think of it this way, How much time do you spend training yourself to make that all important shot with a rifle, alot? a little?

I dont run hounds, but I do read the forum, and Id have to say these fellas put in more time training the dogs than I have ever trained myself with a firearm.

I would urge you, do some reading, ask them some questions and then make a determination as to how you feel about it.
I am quite certain they wont bite! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Jacob, head down to the hound forum, I think your head will spin clear off /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Lots of cool stuff to be learned.
and congrats on the successful trip.

I ran greyhounds for years when I was younger. News flash there in not much training to them, they either run or they don't. They run by sight. You take for or five OL BOYS with pickups and 4 or 5 dog in each truck and the race is on. sometimes we would use a spoter plane in the air, everyone had CB radios, Then U had to get your dogs in the right place in the right time. Turn your dogs out and it was on. It was like NASCAR with dogs and pickups. My truck was a flat bed dully with a 454 auto 4x4, everyone run big blocks then. One of the best things was betting on your dogs, who dog would catch the coyote frist. GOOD TIMES. I miss it vary much,

Bring those greyhounds up here, gives us something else to shoot at. Seriously, here with many different landowners ,livestock, and fences, greyhounds trespassing from farm to farm would be very unwelcome and not tolerated, but this is farm country.

Glad I hunt on private land where access is limited and truck loads of pseudo Nascar drivers with rifles can't go. the few that I know who have tried it in farm country always got in trouble with the law and the landowners.

One thing to remember coursing dogs have been used as a hunting weapon thousands of years befor the rifle was ever invented. It's just another weapon for predator control.

It's not the dog that is the problem, like any other type of hunting it's they ethics of the hunter that gives the sport a bad name. I know one old guy that paid for his farm with his fur money running greyhound up in northern Minn. Everyone thought he was great. He didn't go roaring across the country side flushing them out with a pickup but but was pretty much a hunted them as you would spot and stalk them. He'd spot one from the road and walk out with the dogs until the fox flushed. His dogs didn't rip them to shreds, one bite and the run was over.
