Hunting in Alabama?

I'm getting dragged to see relatives in Alabama in early February. I believe they live near Grand Bay, but I'm still waiting to find out the exact town. All I remember is that its near the Mississippi border and toward the southern end I think.
So my question is, should I bring a shotgun along? Is there good public land that an outsider could find some upland or duck hunting on? I looked at some seasons online, and it seems only upland hunting will be going on then?
Not against predator or deer hunting if possible, but would rather travel with a shotgun and not the AR-15 or other rifles.

Thanks in advance to anyone with some insight.
