Hunting in Western WV

Tracks are abundant here in Hardy county, coyote sightings are not, they are mostly nocturnal and night hunting has legality issues. I've saw 6 yotes in the woods here, killed one and it stalked me as I called to a spring gobbler. How large is a eastern coyotes home range? I know places to kill yotes but its about a 6 mi pack in and then 6 mi. out, gettin to old for that carrying on!

You're not far from my Dad then,he resides in Romney.

I wouldn't pack in for a yote,unless it was a week long hunt or something.

Lot's of yotes here in this general area,my impression has been they roam about like a deer,maybe a square mile,but I'm not an expert.Anybody else know ?

Take a look at a topo map of the Monogahelia (sic)in the area of Cheat Mtn. and also Bear Run in the area of Cranberry Glades. Not sure that Bear Run is the National Forest.
 
Heck,I hunt across from Cheat mountain in Pocahontas,around Span Oak Trail.

Maybe we should plan an assault on the coyote population one weekend this summer ?

Is bear run public land, and is it covered up in people during the bucks only season ?
 
Some of it is posted and some open. I'll probably be up that way during spring gobbler season trying to get away from the heat. I suspect buck season sees a lot of people up there due to accessibility.

The big strip jobs that are in the national forest are just south of Cheat Bridge.This was owned by Mower Lumber Co. and was stripped and timbered in the early 80s.
Not for sure but I think it was to get out of the responsability of treating water ect. that Mower ?gave?sold?whatever? this land to the national Forest Service.There are miles of reclaimed strip jobs there on both sides of Shavers Fork.The east side can be accessed by driving right on past Cheat Mt.Club the other side can be accessed by a couple different routes off of Rt.250
I've deer hunted it and bear hunted it.Haven't been back up there since 98 but theres some good hunting there,hope this helps. rws2
 
Hey rws2,thanks for the reply! I haven't even been calling for the first time yet,for a couple of reasons.One is that I'm still getting my gear together, and also still in the process of working up the best load for both rifles [one is still at the gunsmiths].The other is that I figure if I wait a little while,I won't kill any wet bitches, and will add to my supply of possible targets this fall as a result ?

Glad to find somebody in WV that is interested in Predator hunting besides myself, seems to be a pretty rare thing here.Duck hunting was the same way 25 years ago,I pretty much had the rivers to myself,now they are covered up in duck hunters /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif .

I did a search on Google for some kind of predator club here in WV,but had no luck.Closest one is in Pennsylvania.I went ahead and joined it anyway,might meet somebody who huns the border areas.

I could use some help from someone experienced, and I'd get to know the Cheat area better that way. In exchange I can show you some areas in Pocahontas that were covered up in bobcat sign last year during the deer season.There were also quite a few coyotes,they'd come right up to the tent[within 15 yards] late in the night and howl because they wanted the deer we had hanging in the trees.

I'm a newbie to calling,I've blown calls till I'm blue in the face and nothing but crows,hawks ans a big ole owl has come in well at least that I've seen anyway.
Where you live in Pocohantas Co.? I don't get away too much anymore but plan to do some hunting soon.
Right now about 175yds.away I got a den of Red Fox shes got 4 pups and they are about 1/2 her size.I can watch them from the porch,but they are in no danger from me as I don't kill foxes anymore but before someone starts moaning I could care less if someone else does.
I'm just after those coyotes and so far they are winning a whole bunch to zip.So I'm hardly experanced.
I did miss a coyote in Texas this past january while there hunt Aoudads in th Chinati Mts. I thought it was about 300yds. and held just a tad over and let one go.It took off like a scalded ape and I ranged where he had stood and to my surprise it was only 225yds. I sailed it right over top of it.Oh well!!! But I did kill a record book ram and a javalina and shot lots of scaled quail but they call them blues there.
Bobcats interest me alot I've only saw 2 in my life and they were moving at high speed.
Who knows maybe we can get together and call some sometime if I can ever get away from this farm.

Heck yeah,let's get together and call some yotes and cats,I'm dying to go. I don't live in Pocahontas county,I live in Mercer county,but I hunt Pocahontas county in the fall, for turkey and deer.This year I'll be predator hunting instead of turkey hunting.It's only about a 4 hr drive.I've been considering taking a week off when fox and bocat come in and camping up there for a week and predator hunting. I get 4 weeks of vacation a year and the wife doesn't like to travel,so I get to burn my days up hunting!! Life is good,hehehe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif !!

During deer gun season last year we saw more bobcat sign than we've ever seen.It is covered up because nobody traps them there.I figure between the yotes and B-cats,it's no wonder there's not that many turkeys in Poca county.

Do you run cattle on your farm or what ? My youngest brother[got 4 of them] graduated from WVU in morgantown several years ago.

Mercer Co. eh! I got an old Army buddy I haven't saw in over 25 years in the Bluefield area.Luther Boothe is his name.
Yea we run cattle got 60 brood cows mostly reg.angus and a few crosses we use for club calves.My daughters of 13 and 17 show cattle and this year lambs too.We show at the Round Up at Jacksons Mill and last year at the WV State Fair.Not sure where all this year.These kids keep me way busier than I'd like to be.
We are at opposite ends of the state for sure.I got an idea for you!!!! There more coyotes than you can shake a stick at in Boone Co. we see there tracks all over the area we hog hunt.This is Coal Co. property and they could care less if you hunt or not as long as you stay away from active mining sites,don't park on the haul roads and don't litter.Now this should be closer to you than Pocohantas Co. it has lots of stripmines and absolutely no shortage of coyotes.No permission needed just go as long as you adhere to the 3 rules above no one will bother unless you run into a game warden and then he will only check your lisc. I've been checked there 3 times and never once did they ask if I had permission cause they knew I didn't but the coal co. don't care.I could email you directions if your interested.
Man there is some Jim Dandy bucks there too,I killed a 120 class 8pt. there in 2000 and saw one that was 140 pushin 150 but at 700yds. and dark almost there all I could do was watch.
If I could get away I would meet you in Beckley at Harper Rd. Exit and we could slip over the mountain.Its 1hr. from that exit to the top of the mountain where I hunt.But I just don't see any way I can get away,this is a busy time of the year for me being a farmer.
But I really want to try Boone.Co but when is the question.I'll email detailed info if your interested and you can slip up there any time you feel like it.
 
Heck yeah,send the info,if this is your busy time of year,no problem.I have buddies with kin who live in Boone,and several of my buddies hog hunt there every year.That is some really rough country though,rocky as can be,cliffs,etc.I know several people who've hog hunted there and swore they'd never go bback,hahahahaha!

How are you fixed for this fall, farm wise,work wise I mean,things slow down then ? Maybe we could go then ?

No Problem this is a good area,keep it to yourself and you'll have a good huntin area,fair amount of turkeys,deer,bear and hogs there.Coyote Tracks out the yin yang.It will be lots closer to you home than going clear up to Pocohantas Co.

Thanks! I'm still gonna hit pocahontas though,simply because it's where I gun hunt deer,and going up there early in the season gives me a chance to scout around and find the deer.
