Hunting Mountain Lions- have questions??

If you are in control of the stand situation and used sturdy bullets like Nosler Partition (60 grain) or similar bullets, you would be OK (given an AR15-type rifle and 5-rounds quickly available). Also carry a .357 or larger handgun.

I get a lion tag every year. Like you said: "You never know!".

I often hunt with a bolt gun so always carry a handgun with me.

As for me, I would have my ar-15 with a 30 round mag. fully loaded and a hand gun or two. just in case my 30 semi auto magazine missed all 30 and the cat was still recognizable. My uncle used to guide people on lion hunts near cortez, CO. and he always had a few stories of those cats will to survive. Be careful.
 
I'd carry two ar-15's then. ha ha. What about the ruger 10/22 with its factory 10 round clip, can you have those, or is it 5 for all semi autos?

I carry an extra magazine (5-rounds) on my rifle, my Glock 20 (10mm with 16 rounds of 180 grain HP and extra magazine of 15 rounds) and a big knife, when hunting in Arizona. If I am hunting in the southern part of the state, I also carry a few magazines of SS109 or Hornady TAP(30 rounds each) in my pack for 2-legged predators(self-defense), just in case. Those 2-legged pradators sometimes have AK-47s (I have not seen any yet, though).

I do not have the AZ Game & Fish book handy to investigate the high-capacity magazine rule for rim-fire firearms, so will have to defer to someone else on that point.

I bet you have some big cats in Utah.

Karl, thanks for your post, I have never seen a cat with my own eyes in the wild, but i have seen plenty of tracks in the snow and on the ice when i go to a certain lake ice fishing. I haven't seen any two legged predators either, or even tracks in the wild. only domesticated ones working construction.

I also read everything I can find on the subject of mountain lions. There is a book written by a man in Tucson, Arizona, with the title: Cougar.

I found it in a library but want to buy it; this book tells of many of the attacks on humans, with lots of attacks in Arizona. It is a great book on cat body language, too.
