Hunting Multiple Species???

When I was a kid growing up in Georgia I had a truley awesome squirrel dog, helped out my grandpa with his beagles and experienced the occansional coon hunt. In essence I miss hunting over hounds. I am toying with the idea of getting started with hounds here in Idaho but have no experience. What critters can you hunt with the same hounds?? Can the same dogs effectively hunt bears, cats, and coyotes or does one need to specialize? Also if anyone is close to Twin Falls, I'd love to accompany.

Howdy and welcome aboard. I believe there are some very good houndsmen down your way. They can work different species although I doubt you want your cat and or bear hounds running coyotes. Usually they start a hound on coons and go up from there and still run the occassional coon. There are some VERY good hound sites you should check out. I know a couple of guys down your way that have pups coming soon out of good big game hounds. I got back into hounds last year and it has been the best and most fun I've had in years. I now have 5 hounds, one finished hound and 4 pups of varying ages. It can be spendy getting into it, hounds, and equipment begin to add up, dog box, shock collars, tracking collars and units, leashes, collars, dog houses, kennels, vet bills, pups, dog food, and then there is all that time training. Which has gotten me back into shape and I can't tell you how much fun the last year has been. Good luck and I'm sure you'll meet some nice guys down your way. Fred

You can train a dog to hunt multiple game but it all depends on how many headachs you want. I want mine to only run bear and cat. If you throw in something like coyote(non tree game) into the mix your asking for nothing but headachs IMO. You won't be able to target hunt a specific animal as easily. Some dogs prefer one game over the other and usually going from bear to cat season you will see some sort of a transition period in your dogs where it will take a few times out before your dogs will settle down from running heads up drifting a bear track to putting there nose down and pounding out a old cat track. Using dogs on multiple game I don't think they ever reach there full potential of what they are. The best dogs I have ever been around were straight on whatever type of game they were hunted on, weither it be strictly bobcat or strictly bear. If your going to run multiple game keep the tree game and non tree game in seperate categorys at least and use different dogs for those categorys.

I am going to have to agree with the rest I wouldn't try to have my treeing dogs run coyotes. We used to have primarily a bear pack but they would also do well on cougars, cats and coons. We just held the younger dogs off the bobcat cold trails to cut down on potential break overs.
