Hunting trucks?

What does everyone use for hunting? I have just been using my 2008 Chevy 2500hd with a leveling kit and 33” tires. But I’m really thinking about like a government auction humvee would be ideal for my use. It’s mostly two track roads in north Dakota with deep snow on them.

Started hauling the jeep in 07

Much more maneuverable in the brush and better in mud than heavier truck.

Alas, jeep had to go so back to the Z.

Sure do miss the jeep, though.

08 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. Big V6 with plenty of power to get you through the rough stuff. And not to bad on fuel.

Dang hm could you find a bigger wench?

I just use my Tacoma. It works well for the places I want to go. I’ve been considering a side x side, a 4 wheeler and/or a motorcycle for several years but haven’t decided to buy any of them yet.

2013 f150 ecoboost. Plenty of space inside (I’m 6’3”), rear seats fold up out of the way, factory rear locker, tons of low end power when you need it but sips gas when you don’t. My favorite thing about it after ditching my 02’ Cummins in how quiet it is in the hills.

04 Dodge 2500 diesel, great road vehicle, I don't take it off road much if I can help it, it's gotta last. I've had it 19 years and it's gotta get 30 in before it can retire lol with the price of new vehicles now. Not very good off road anyway.

08 RZR for the rough stuff, goes virtually anywhere unless the snow gets deep and then I stay home anyway. I gotta play in the stuff at work enough I don't play much in it for fun.

06 Chevy K 2500 HD feed truck. Since last spring though if it's within 10 or so miles of home I take the 2020 Polaris Ranger 1000 XP. The cab is enclosed and I put an after marker heater in it. It gets 26 mpg and can go down the road or almost anywhere else you want without tracking up a pasture. AS 204 AR says, it's not good in deep snow.
We took it to Western Kansas the last 2 years on our annual trip and put 237 miles on it in one day.

It's receiver mounted; can hang it on either end of the truck. When I got the jeep, moved the winch over, same setup. Never used it on the back of the jeep; in fact never stuck the jeep, but did pull a Suburban out of belly deep mud w/it on the jeep one night. Jeep was too light & kept sliding until I intentionally stuck it before the Suburban would budge.

If the winch looks big on the truck......

Joked w/my wife that if I ever couldn't find a parking place for the jeep, I could always hang it from the nearest tree. When I sold the jeep, the winch went back on the truck.

A few years back, I buried my truck getting a downed nilgai out of the brush about 300 yards from hard ground. The winch paid for itself that day. Had to snake the nilgai out of brush with it first, then heavy rain hit before we could pick her up. Roller chop was flooded so had to get the truck out, leaving the nilgai at edge of brush where I could reach it from from the caliche road with a rope.

Made 3 pulls with the winch to get truck out, the worst (from the arrow) was nearly a 45* pull and the truck was belly deep in mud w/no bottom. Sure was glad I had plenty of winch as the front wheels were plowing broadside in mud up to the frame.

Nilgai was at the edge of the brush line about 300 yards from the road which was the only hard ground around.

Strung a nylon rope through snatch block to small mesquite at side of road and pulled her out.

The downpour stopped just as we got her to the road.

Since my buddy shot the cow, he field dressed it while I recovered all our gear.

Just for grins...

This is a video of me and Steve Garrett having to get a truck unstuck a few different times. It all pretty much sucked when it was happening, but it's fun to look back on now, lol!

Me and Steve being dummies...

Great video, Dave, thanks for sharing. You're right, the farther in the rear view mirror such uh-ohs get, the more fun they are.

I drive a 78ish k20 4x4, 454 th400 flatbed. Frames been busted in 3 or 4 spots & welded back together, it's rusty, the fenders have been hacked back all they can to clear the humvee tires. It gets about as good of gas mileage as you'd expect, it's grumpy and rides like crap but I like it.... most days

After 20 years in the army guard, 15 of those as a mechanic.

You’d have to pay me to take a hmmwv. And even then, I’d leave with the cash and you’d have to figure out what to do with the truck. Too many problems with them and everything being a 24V system. Just not worth it.
