Hunting with a Stool

I often use a stool and Predator Sniper Stix with extensions. One stool I like is a swivel stool. It allows me to pivot 360 degrees.

Boy, can I relate to that!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

what i like about my 3 sided blind was, "i choose where to call from, not the terrain" you actually can take a small stool and put it inside the blind and carry them both together. if your shooting a center fire, the front is as good as any bench rest at the range.

Got tired of having to wander around looking for a spot with enough clear space in front of me so I could see more than 15 feet...figured I'd try one of those "grandpa" chairs. Couldn't believe the difference it makes when calling on flat ground. The little bit of extra elevation translates into being able to see much further and getting (not to mention making) shots that I would never have gotten at ground level. I use one of the chairs that has a built in "cooler" under the seat. I put my caller, an extra mag. and shooting sticks in the "cooler", sling the chair over one shoulder and my rifle over the other and I'm ready to go.

This is exactly why I am wondering how benificial it might be.

your kill percentage will go way up using a stool and a blind. if you use a mouth call, and you put your hands up underneath your face mask, there is still some movement and they can see it. you can slowly pan left and right with the sides higher than the front too.if you see a dog comming in from one side or the other, you can sorta lean to that side and keep your face and outline hidden real well. and those dogs that just go running by you, the stool allows you to be on your feet instantly and turn and shoot him, especially with a shot gun.remember the blind only weighs, 6 lbs. when you cut off the bottom wire, leave the vertical pieces , then when you open up the blind, you just step on the horizontal piece and it pokes the vertical pieces in the ground and it's free standing

I like to keep things quick and simple, yet still remain comfortable, so I do carry a stool. I did switch from the traditional tubular folding stools to a stadium seat a couple years ago though. It's probably 18x18x3" thick when folded, it weighs almost nothing and opens up to a nice padded back rest and padded a$$ pad.

Count me in the dedicated perch crowd. The only time I do not is if I'll be on a hillside looking down over the possible areas I can shoot, then I use one of those dense foam pads.

My favorite stool is a little tripod job with a red cloth seat that is perfect as long as the ground is frozen and fairly flat. The reason I like it the best is that the metallic legs are not too loud. You can "thunk" them against something and they don't make much noise. It does sink in to soft ground and you can fall over if you concentrate too much.

Next favorite would be the dove stools, just don't hit the legs against anything. They're the right height and are reasonably easy to get out of. They're even cammo'd, for those who think it matters.

Close behind that is the common modern day cloth and metal "soccer mom" folding chairs. They are the perfect height but it takes about an hour for me to get out of them.

Last but not least would be a good old 5 gallon bucket. Absolutely the perfect height, the tops of your ears are usually just at the tops of the taller ground cover. The only problem is that they are awfully loud. They can also shatter at the worst possible moment in extremely cold weather.... ask me how I know this.

Where I hunt your shooting opportunities would be limited if you don't afford yourself a bit of elevation.

I don't leave the house without the fatman chair. It is really a turkey seat with a backrest.....I bought them for all my buds around home and they like them as well.
I use a couple of arrows with sheep castration bands as shooting stick as well.
The trick is to setup where you have range of motion.
I am left handed, so I usually setup to where I think the coyote will show up from straight on or inside my right shoulder. I hope this makes sense.
Anyway I know you are going ater cats and the seat is an important part of the setup. You got to be still and to be still you got to be comfortable...
Here is a pic of the seat.

PS the reason I like this type of seat is that you can keep the legs flat if there is short cover and if you are sitting on the side of a hill you can deploy the front legs only and still be square. I got them from cabelas - type in turkey seat in the search funtion.

cat daddy,
Because you have to sit so still for the cats a chair with a back rest is what I am going for. It will help me sit even more still.

This is the best stool I found for me. It folds as you can see and its legs are shorter on one side so you can compensate for ground angles. I try to find a tree or big rock to set against so my back don't get tired. I use my own shooting sticks also. Bought it at Bass Pro. Very light aluminum and webbing with strap that goes over your shoulder. I never weighed it but I bet it don't weigh more than two pounds.

Ain't it the truth. And some young uns think their body will last foever /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Take care of what you got while you got it, it last longer that way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
Three legged swivel seat's what I use. Get to go more often and stay longer that way!!!

I used to use a turkey stool similar to what peterjc & Nic_58 have shown pictured. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
In fact, I still have it, just can't use it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
The legs are square tubing that are length adjustable. I really like it.
Problem is, it's only rated @ 225#. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
Since I have weighed quite a bit more than that in recent years, I have switched to an old "stadium seat" with backrest that used to belong to the Grandparents. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I actually have 2 of them that are as old as I am. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I painted both khaki. One I attached a rifle sling to, for carrying. The other I attached just a piece of 3/8" rope, for carrying.
They weigh about 2-3 pounds.
I picked up a couple more, almost new ones, this Summer @ a yard sale...50 cents for the pair! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif I just couldn't pass up having some spares around for that price! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm generally a stool man and I highly recomend using one if your area has high grass, vegitation or stickers on the ground. I use an old dove hunters seat, but that's only because I'm to lazy to get something else ... and it's kept my butt of the ground for so many years now I have a hard time changing. But the most important thing to keep in mind is to keep-it-simple. ...... Not all country is good for a stool though. When hunting northern Arizona or the upper reagons of the San Carlos Indian Reservation I rarely use a stool and just sit on the ground.

Michael,
Is this because hte vegitation is shorter and would make you far more visible?

I have used the Nif-T-Seat in the past, but recently made my own. It' just like the Nif-T-Seat, but I used a bicycle seat on the end. You can lean in any direction and still stay seated. It only weighs about 3lbs.
