Hunting Wolverines

Has anyone tried to hunt wolverines? Where I normally deer hunt, I've heard from numerous people that a wolverine has been spotted in the area as early as a week ago. One guy I talked to said during bowhunting season he saw what he thought was a wolverine on top of a deer...People aren't saying anything cause they aren't supposed to be around here but I think its about time I find out if one is in my area for myself! Anyone hunt them before? Any tips? I've hunted coyotes for quite a while and use a Foxpro Firestorm. Any tips on what calls to use and what not would be awesome!

Thanks
Bobby

I would think it would like getting struck my lightning to actually call out a wolverine...I know a few guys that having been calling wolves and yotes in prime wolverine areas for many many years and have yet to see one, let alone call one out...but you never know I guess! Good luck, can't offer any tips though!

Well just don't shoot one. They are very rare and very protected in the northern plains.

I bet most are seeing porcupines although it is not impossible that they are seeing a wolverine.

Might call the game and fish and see what the laws are on hunting them. Noone I've talked to seems to know.

We'll see what happens I guess... We have trail cam's set up all over that area and haven't caught a sight of him yet.

i doubt its a wolverine too, rumors get around that one person saw something, then other people just happened to see it too. Kinda like bigfoot. as far as being on top of a deer that is very possible if it was one.

As far as hunting one, im betting they are not legal animal to take

I don't buy into some of the animals on that last. Some are there just because the species only ever existed in a small location and by their standards they've been endangered pretty much since they existed.

wolverines are extremely seclusive animals that have huge home territories and only socialize with other wolverines during breeding, and have slower procreation rates than other animals. this leads to few rare sightings and very low population densities. that does NOT mean they are endangered. the only thing it takes to get an animal on the endangered or threatened species list is lobbyists and large amounts of money. The tree huggers fought the delisting of wolves because they said they were still endangered. If you live and hunt in the west, you know that is absolutely no even remotely accurate.

I try to base my opinions on these things based on science and facts, no tree hugger rhetoric. oh and by the way, there are a lot of folves in my village that trap wolverine and are wearing wolverine garments that would disagree with you too.

I think I can see your heart bleeding.....

I know they are hunted in Alaska, so I'm pretty sure they are not an endangered...We'll see what happens when I talk to the warden, I will keep you guys posted

I've seen them. I know probably a dozen or 2 guys who have trapped them. I could have shot 1. But all I had with me was my 500 A- Sq. .It would have wrecked the hide. . And you DON'T. Wreck a wolverine pelt. The smallest rifle we had with us wad a 300 H+H. The other was a 375 ..
They are built like a piece of granite ..
We didn't really want to shoot it anyway. It had taken over a trophy moose kill. We may well have been the first humans that one had ever seen or smelled. This was in western Alaska..

Geeez, guys. I did not realize that having an opinion was not allowed here. So what if I'm a new member with only three posts and have developed opinions over my 67 years on this planet.

Go out and kill anything you want, any where you want, any time you want. No skin off my nose. I just expressed MY thought, after all, I have to live with myself and my actions.

I'd much rather see the wolverines expand into an area they had not been in or had not been in for a long time. Wouldn't be nice to have a sustainable population of wolverines to hunt in ND? Let them get established, then hunt. I guess I am a tree hugger. I want an environment that I can enjoy and hunt in.

Sorry if my desire for having an opinion that differs from yours. Sincere apologies to anyone that I've offended.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Jerry

Jerry, Don't take it to heart. The reality is that the enemy always infiltrates into friendly territory. Now everyone knows where your coming from, not that you owed us an explanation. So.... lighten up Francis. (joke)

For the guy in Nodak. Unless you are venturing way west over into the rockies you never see a wolverine and no you can't hunt them. I doubt the government has much to worry about since less than 1% of avid outdoorsman in the rockies ever see one. Their habitat consist the highest peaks possible. I lived in Nodak when I was in the Air Force and there isn't sh*t for animals from what I saw. Out here in the mountains I see several grizzlies and wolves every year but never a wolverine.
