Hunting Wolverines

We'll see what happens I guess... We have trail cam's set up all over that area and haven't caught a sight of him yet.

It is easier to just look at your ND Game and Fish site. They are on the no open season list. Just like the wolves and bears that show up from time to time you can't shoot them.

There are sightings from time to time as far away from the Rockies as central SD (I think there was one in Iowa decades ago) so it could happen, but these are once in several lifetimes sort of sightings.

They have been considered for listing in the lower 48 so back off the guy who pointed that out, it was rejected but they were considered and still could be one day. Only Montana in the lower 48 has a very limited season on them, I think I heard they take in the upper single digits each year. It isn't something you could go set out to call in. I'm betting nearly all that are taken there are trapped.

As far as hunting one, im betting they are not legal animal to take

Maybe there is lots of Bigfoot!!

i didnt say they werent considered, i said that has no real world relevance when talking about actual populations. Remember the wolf topic i brought up?

As to the new, if you are not a Troll, i apologize, sincerely. even though i do not agree with what you said, that does not mean you dont get to have an opinion. That is the M.O. for trolls though, they join and immediatly post anti-hunting responces etc etc.

So like i said, if you are not, and just have a strong (and wrong

) opinion on this subject, i am sorry and welcome to PM.

Happy Turkey Day Gentleman,
Carry on

I like to fish and hunt and do other things in the great out-of-doors. You disagree with my way of thinking and that is certainly OK with me. We can agree to disagree.

No troll, don't want to be.

Oh, by the way, there is a Bigfoot! When people see my size 15 shoes they have been known to call me Bigfoot.

When I was a deputy in south Texas they used to refer to me as the tree (I'm on the tall side).

I would be thrilled to see a wolverine but would only shoot one with my camera here in the lower 48.
I only know two people who have seen one here during my lifetime. One of those was dead on a mountain pass road.

I have taken badger but they are no longer legal to shoot here in WA anymore, only live trap in season with proper license and equipment.

According to the articles they have til 2013 to decide on protection. There are so few here not sure why someone would want to hunt them anyway.
Use to be common to see badgers but not anymore..
jack rabbits are closed here also. we used to hunt them heavily. Now they are recovering slightly only in very restricted areas. I often see them dead in heavy pressure areas or around popular target shooting spots.

Tripod,

I did not know that you guys could not shoot badgers.

I saw a dead one on a road on the highline in MT. I believe that is one of the few places you can trap them i the lower 48.

I agree, there are not a lot in the lower 48, for the reasons already stated. Not because they they are going the way of the DOdo bird, they are jsut a low density animal and probly always will be. There are a lot more in AK for obvious reasons, they thrive on big secluded areas and that is most of AK.

Too bad about your badgers there, i really like badgers, and like to call them and spot and stalk them too.

I know a guy who shot one in Alaska off of a moose carcass during a grizzly hunt. He said the guide had only seen 1 or 2 himself.

I can tell you it is a dang cool mount.

Nothing to it. When your putting the liners back in your packs after crossing a Mount Veniaminof glacial stream just let him have it with your Caribou rifle. Getting to him barefoot isn't so bad, but getting back to your boots over that Volcanic Lava flat is more than tricky.

Hey DoubleCK, do they stink like badgers do? It seems like all members of the weasel family reek. I got a guy coming over right now whose son just caught a mink that he wants me to tan. First thing he said after telling me what he had was how bad it smelled.

A local high school biology teacher got pics of one here in Michigan a couple years ago. After tracking and setting trail cams for nearly four years he finally got pics.
First confirmed siting in over 100 years.

After all this is the Wolverine state...Go Blue!

Brendan, It's been awhile, but I don't remember an odor issue.

I catch a few mink in cage traps here. After they spend a little time under water in the creek they don't smell so bad.

While Bowhunting in Alaska I spotted one feeding on a Caribou carcass that I had killed a couple of days prior. I was about 300-400 yards away just glassing for more Caribou. Noticed what I thought was a Black Bear feeding on the carcass, turned out to be a Wolverine. He fed there for about 10 minutes then loped off into the brush. They are really a neat animal and I was lucky to have been able to watch it.
