I couldn't wait any longer. Bought my hunting license online last night. Woke up this morning and gathered most of my equipment. Forgot any kind of bi pod or tri pod. Drove out into the desert and set up for the first stand of the year. About 10 minutes into the set I see movement coming in from my right. Action on the first stand of the year! It kind of slow trotted right by the foxpro. Came to a stop two different times. I had it in my cross hairs both times, but something just didn't look right about this coyote. Face was too slim and pointy. Is this just a pup or.....I've called in a kit fox near this location last year. The one last year was tiny. The size of a big house cat. This mornings critter was bigger than the one I seen last year. A bit of Google and I found this picture of a kit fox. This is exactly what I seen. These things are endangered. Wish they wouldn't show up at my sets. For now the 6mm arc still has 0 kills. Glad I didn't pull the trigger!
Would you have pulled the trigger on this little guy thinking it was a pup? Entire encounter lasted about 45 seconds before he disappeared and never showed himself again.

In Colorado all I ever seen were Red Fox.
These gray fox are the first I've ever seen.
My kid wanted to go for a ride in our rock crawler tonight. In a different location we seen yet another fox. This one stood on top of a rock head lights shining off his eyes for a little while. The Kit foxes are tiny little critters about 5 pounds. The two foxes I've seen today are not that small. Going to see if they have a season
 
A San Joaquin kit fox? Are you in Kalifornia? Don’t even look at it.. they would love to put you in jail for that.
I have called up many over the years there. I’ve also had more than a few game wardens up my ass about it too. Once I was calling an area in Tulare County, where I am from, about a half mile from a preserve area. I called up 3 at once and they came scurrying along right to me. I watched them and continued calling for coyotes. About 5 minutes later a green truck hauls ass down a dirt road coming at me. I stand up and 2 wardens jump out,man and woman. They were watching me with giant binos from inside the preserve, and accused me of shooting kit fox. When I denied it and asked them to prove it they said that they could not but thought they saw me shooting towards the preserve area and proceeded to educate me on kit fox and how they were seriously endangered. I told them I just found 3 of them for you so you’re welcome . They were very shitty and checked me from top to bottom.
Also, just an fyi, you can hunt grey fox in Kali,which look a bit different, from November to February, but you can’t use an Ecaller. And also, most game wardens don’t know anything about the regs when it comes to predator hunting there, and will tell you it’s legal, but if you get one that knows, they will get you if they catch you.

I was the last one to call and shoot a bobcat in California, with hunting tags, on the last day of the season, when they banned it.

Not to far outside of Beatty Nevada.

I like the Howa. It's light weight and shoots OK. Got a lot of 2 inch groups at first. After shooting probably 300 rounds of four different bullets and several powders I've gotten it to shoot some groups that were 1 inch 5 shot groups. The stock was tight against the barrel on one side. Had to do some sanding to get it free floated. Trigger is great for a factory trigger.

6 ARC is a nice round. Only have one coyote shot with it. Kind of expected more damage from that 75 grain speer hp bullet. Just some blood on the exit. I didn't inspect all that well. I'm sure if I hit the shoulder instead of behind the shoulder there would have been more damage. Same shot from a 22-250 shooting 50 grain vmax same shot would have left a fist size hole.
