I feel dumb for asking this...

I think on the average Whitetail eat better than Mule Deer do at least here in the Rockies. The reason is exactly as stated above. Most western Whitetail live around creek bottoms and there is generally alfalpha, wheat and corn fields nearby. Their diet is just better than the average Mulie. I did shoot a big ole prairie Mule Deer buck last year and he surprised me. The meat has been nothing short of fantastic. Neither one compares to Elk or Moose though.
 
I have taken grain fed mule deer and grain fed whitetails off the same fields and there is a definite difference in taste, and the mule deer always smell bad. I won't shoot a mule deer unless it has a big rack.
 
I'm not for sure but I think that only a whitetail buck can breed a mule deer doe because the mulie bucks cannot catch the whitetail doe, under normal circumstances.
