I am buying a new gun today. In Michigan where i live we can only hunt with rimfire rifles or birdshot afterdark for coyotes. Any recommendations. I am looking at 10/22 lr, 10/22 mag, and also a savage .22 mag bolt action. Any one have any suggestions. Any preference between bolts and semi autos. I am also going to use this for most of my small game hunting, mostly squirrels. I have a nice .243 that i use for yotes in the daytime. Also could use a recommendation on good grain weight for yotes out of the .243.

thanks guys

I would get the Savage. Ruger stopped production of the 10/22 Mag because of feeding/ejection problems. All the Savages I own are absolute tack drivers. Get the one with the Accu-trigger, you'll love it. I load 75 grain Nosler ballistic tips over H380 powder for my coyote loads. Minimal damage, drt. Most shots at or under 150 yards. Happy shopping.

I just realized this but i also have the choice of the marlin 925m also. Everyone in my family gave me gift cards to wally world. So what ever they carry is what i have to buy.

Im still shopping. I could really use your help guys. Fairly new to varmints. Lots of deer and small game experience. Not sure which is the best to go. .22lr, .22 mag, or the .17 hmr. can you guys lend a hand. what ever it is i t has to come from walmart. they have the savage .22 mag, marlin .22 mag. rem. 597 .22 mag and an abundance or .22s and .17

bigmike22,
What your location in Mi.?

I'd stay away from 22lr for pred's
Your better off running some good loads in a shotgun for nite hunting . Copper plated lead BBs or T-shot.

Welcome !!

Tim

I'm new to predator hunting and this board, which is a tremendous source of information, so I may be too late in replying, but if you don't see what you want in the case at Wally World, ask to see the gun order book. That may give you some additional choices and ideas. They can order the rifle, which takes about 3 business days. It does, however, do away with that warm feeling you get by getting to handle it first.

I say shotgun and lead BB, T, or dead coyote. I hound hunt with a fella that shooots hevi shot turkey loads, 5 shot I beleave, and it works good for him. Likely they will be up close and personal in the dark a good patterning shotgun will be as efective at 50yds as the 22 mag. Stay away from the 17 they may work on those desert rats in the south but not enough power up in our area
