weight of bullets should perform better with this setup????. I will be shooting coyotes to deer... but this question is really more of an overall general knowledge question...thanks

With a 1:10 twist .308 you will be able to shoot the longer (usually heavier) bullets, up to (probably) the 220gr. I'd start with 168gr and work up.

Rifle barrels have lands and grooves (rifling) spiraling down the length of the barrel to spin the bullet and stabilize it. The "twist rate" is how many inches it takes the rifling inside the barrel to complete one full spiral. That translates into how many inches of travel it takes for the bullet to spin one revolution. Longer (usually heavier) bullets need to spin faster to be properly stabilized and so need a "faster twist" barrel.

For reference, a 1:10 twist barrel spins a bullet one revolution in every ten inches of travel.

Well, here we go on that twist thing now in the .308. I have 4 DPMS LR's from 16 to 24" barrels. My custom sniper rifle is a 1 in 10 Krieger as well.

In my experience it tends to do with loads being consistent in the AR format. I generally run 168 match of some type in my rifles as these are what we use for work. Anyway, my rifles have a tendency to prefer Hornady 110gr TAP, CorBon 125 HP's, Hornady 168 TAP BTHP not the A-Max, Federal 168/175's. See no need to get any heavier than this. These have shown 10-shot groups averages of 1" or less at 100 yds.

Have a SBS Steyr .308 that dearly loves Hornady 110gr Tap loads. Don't be fooled in the 1 in 10 heavy bullet thing like 1 in 8 AR .223s won't shoot light bullets aka...40gr'ers

I'm going to try some Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tips in my LR-308, whenever I get a chance to start up reloading again. I just put a new roof on my reloading room and next it gets a new floor, insulation and wall board, heat, air conditioning, benches, T.V. phone, refer (not the smokin' kind) and sofa, stereo.......well you get the point, it could be a while before I can start reloading again /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

In any case SteveM is correct, don't just go by the twist and heavy bullet thingy, my 11.25 twist 5R flat shoots the 110 TAP ammo, it puts a smile on my mug no doubt /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well I have a 1in10 heavy barrel Howa 1500 that has shot every
bullet I have put into it. From 110 to 180 grainers. Shoots best with 148-165 grainers but will shoot anything. But I am saying that their is no need for anything over 165 maybe even 148. 148 is plenty of bullet for any deer, and I would say to big for any yote if you want to save the fur.

You can shoot pretty much whatever bullet you want, I have launched from the 110's to the 190's in a 10 twist GAP built 308 and it shoots them all well. I hunt with the 168 TSX and punch paper with 175 SMK's. Those TSX's are some loooong bullets, the 168's are quite a bit longer than the 175SMK's. I might put a few 110's on some g'hogs this spring for fun though.

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES...So the bottom line is that I get to go to the range ALOT and shoot ALOT..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I like it!!!!!

peace...mark
