I have a bullet stuck . . .

shankbone

I had to dispatch an unruly possum (who happened to be preggers) the other day and had to use CB caps in my .22 because of my "semi" rural location. Well, one of the bullets got stuck in the barrel. Luckily I had another .22 inside the house, but now I have to figure out how to get the bullet out.

I don't think my one piece cleaning rods are stiff enough, so I'm thinking of using a dowel rod and a hammer.

By the way, I have launched many a CB out of this gun (all CCIs), but this box was FUNKY. One shot would sound like a CCI Stinger, and the next shot would would give a report like snapping your fingers. Maybe the powder load meant for one case went in another?

So what do you all recommend I do to get the glob of lead out of the barrel?

if its up the barrel a couple inches or more, it should be engraved by the rifleing, use some 30 weight oil in the barrel and it may just push out, try it before the hammer, once ya batter the end of the bullet it'll have to be driven out. the dowel would hafta be a 1/8" to fit the bore and it won't stand much pressure

Pour some top line lead cutter in the tube and let it soak over night. It should push out easy the next morning. If you can soak the whole tube in it.

How does lead cutter or any other lead removing agent work? What is the chemical process at play? Oh, and thanks for the replies. I will try the soak and poke method.

When you do the pushing do it from the muzzel unless you know the bullet is stuck closer to that end if that is the case go from the chamber. Lead remover works by disolving lead with out harming the steel of the barrel.

If you can get one, use the cleaning rod for an M16. Their steel not aluminum so can take more of a beating, just remember they are still only about 1/5 of an inch thick.
Let us know how you do it.

It's only a piece of lead. Just push it out with a brass rod or even a wooden dowel. It won't harm anything. You don't need to soak it overnight or any of that other stuff.

use oil, any kind, find out what is shortest way to push out and putin a rod and tap out.

not hard. A wooden dowel will work as well as a cleaning rod, Just take the jag off the cleaning rod.

Just curious, why couldn't you pull a bullet out of a 22 case. And use the powder in that case to shoot the bullet out of your barrel?

Lead remover left in a barrel will ruin it. Had a Savage brought in to shop with a stuck lead bullet it. It also had a brass cleaning rod broken off in it and a piece of steel rod that was used to try to drive the brass rod out. The problem one has trying to drive the bullet out by hitting it directly is the mushroom effect. I can almost guarantee that you will not get it out and the barrel will never be the same. Bullets can be blow out by hydraulic pressure. Take a piece of polished drill rod and anneal the end so it can be threaded. Take a piece of thin leather [cut w/a hole puncher] and attach it to the end of the rod. Fill the barrel with light machine oil, put safety glasses on and hit the rod w/a 4 pound hammer. It will come out with enough force to bounce around the shop a few times. Oil generally sprays everywhere, so don't try this in the living room. Oh..The Savage..I cut the barrel in half and still couldn't get it apart..After it was cut in quarters..it finally pulled apart

Pure Horse muffins...

I have pushed rimfire bullets out of barrels with cleaning rods and no hammer... BY HAND. It will fall on the floor (or your lap!!)

JUST DO IT, before you are talked into re-drilling the barrel.

.

I have slugged enough barrels with SOFT lead bullet to know that some oil, a dowel and gentle use of a hammer will get it out easy.

I did the same thing with a Marlin 22lr bolt. Rod and elbow power fixed the problem.
