I have a Long Action, stock and a 7MM Barrel, what to build?

I have a Bighorn long mag action (on order) a 9tw Bartlien barrel on hand and Manners called today and said the stock ships next week.

So.................

This rifle will be for deer and the possible elk hunt. I had originally planned for a 7mm Mag, and that's not ruled out either. But have been reading about guys that have used a long action for the WSM and SAUM cases to shoot longer bullets.

So I'm really open to the ideas of different cartridges. I'm really interested to see if anyone has used a short mag case on a long action.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Ken that's my original plan, and nothing wrong with it. Just know there are others such as SAUM, WSM 7-300. etc and was just exploring options.

Might as well. As long as you have plenty of barrel for something like that. 26-28" be good.

The 280AI I can like, but if it is a mag. bolt face already, the 7mm Rem Mag is a great cartridge.....

I was meaning list of deer chamberings you have now...

I'd go 7 RUM so I didn't have to deal with the belted cases of the STW. Plus its a bit more fire for those big Berger VLD's.

Mainly deer with a possibility of elk = .280 remington. My .280 has never let me down. Provides enough energy to kill a deer way out there but with moderate recoil & muzzle blast.

Would be ok, but he has a Magnum bolt face already. Nothing wrong with the 280, but it won't work here.

I would look at the 7mm Dakota. It is based off the 404 Jeffery case. It is beltless and is the same length as the 7mm Rem mag. Just a thought.

I'll add that the 7mm Rem has 83.19gr water capacity and the 7mm Dakota has 95.00gr water capacity.
