i have bad shoulder buy gun rest or shooting shoulder pad ?

guys.. i have been shooting my 308 AR15 and 243 bolt alot and shoulder is hurting. i must be getting old. i plan on going prarie dog hunting 3 or 4 times this year. will shoot 700 rounds over 3 days each trip. would you buy a gun rest ( carrols targets has a nice one that holds gun down,$400.00 ) or a strap on shoulder pad ? i have a limb saver pad on butt stocks but still not much help. which one should i buy ? thanks. marty
 
Howdy, back off those blasters and get a .204 and .223. Seriously I had to back off high power from the bench after total shoulder re-construction about 4 years ago..after rehabbing with .22, back to shooting bench centerfires.

I bought the heaviest Cabela's branded shoulder pad and use for .243 and up when shooting from the bench....204 and .223 in any volume are no problem and do not wear the pad.

Getting old ain't for sissies - I'm 71. I use Caldwell Fire Control or Caldwell Rock or Dog-gone good bag with rear bag for all shooting. No experience with a rest that locks the rifle in place..have always looked like gimmicks to me HOWEVER could be great.

Recoil ain't your friend if your shoulder is talking to you now.
 
i sure did not think these 308 and 243 cal guns would catch up with me at age 50 but they have. i will try the 50.00 shoulder pad first, if it dont work i will go with the lead sled rest. thanks for the info. marty
 
Since you are trying to save your shoulder, I'd go with the Caldwell Lead Sled for around $100 (Midway)....You won't feel the recoil...

While they are not the most comfortable when compared to a regular bench rest, it's a lot better than not being able to lift your rifles or little kids up due to a torn shoulder...

As suggested, switching to a lower recoil rifle may be a reasonable answer as well..
 
I would get a .223 (or something similiar) as well as the shoulder pad.
As for the 308 see if it is like the M-16 with a place in the butt stock for the cleaning kit. If so pour that hole full of birdshot. The extra weight will make it easier to shoot.

Get ahold of C&H Research in Lewis,Kansas. They make a Mercury Recoil Suppressor that fits in the screw hole in the stock and is held in place by a dowel cut to hold the Mercury tube ridgidly in place. They come in several weights and they work well.I put them in the stocks of my CVA 50 cal black powder and they tame it very well.
