I have some new ADC work...lol

Though not as fun as coyotes, all of a sudden I have several jobs w/ Armadillo damage. Been trapping a few, but I have one place that they are trap savvy, so this weekend I am going to set up on them at nite. One of them is in a residential neighborhood, so I use rooftops and get them from above. It also makes it easy to survey the yard all around the house w/o detection. I have clearance to discharge firearms in town from the Sheriff's dept. as long as I use a shotgun. Traps are much easier, but this one has my number, so looks like a long nite for me this weekend. Any ideas from folks who control them regularly?

Everytime I set a trap for an armidillo I catch one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(Sorry, couldn't resist... we have no armodillos here)

lol, I think it is a "Texas" thing...I always wondered why they have their legs sticking straight up in the air when they get hit by a car. Seems the road kills never lay flat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I got my dad a youth .22 (will pass down to my grandson) and mounted a cheap laser sight (Crossman?) on it. He lives in a residential area (Boerne) and has the ok from his neighbors but with .22 shorts they don't even hear it. Its quieter than the single shot air rifle he was using!

Archery gear with judo heads do a good job on armidillos, They do make a distinct sound when they hit, the arrow that is, not the armidillo

The only dillo's i've seen were just moseying (sp?) along. One was shot w/ my AR .223, then took off running. Got him with two shotgun blasts (15-20yds?) then had to run off hunting him in the woods in the dark with pistols and flashlights! We saw one later that night, and with a well placed shot (above shoulder) he dropped and started twitching. (I was not the first shooter -- i guess my aim is better!). Just watch out if you don't kill it - he'll be p!ssed!

I've shot a few w/ a bow, if you pressure them they suddenly become a challenge. We had a job controlling them on a ranch one time and used archery to do it. It got to where we were doing good to get in a 20 yard shot, and always had to stalk them from downwind, lol. Lost a bunch of arrows too, if close to the hole they run in it w/ the arrow. A 25" arrow doesn't fit sideways in a 10" hole very well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My dad and I were in florida Bowhunting some pigs, and my dad shot an armadillo with a practice broadhead on (the blades arent sharp). Well that thing took off and got stuck at the entrance of his hole. That arrow snapped in two in a matter of seconds. Those little things are pretty tough!

We don't have many armadillos up here, but I hunted in sw alabama once when it was unusually cool for the area(teens a couple of mornings) and they were out in the day a lot, I shot a dozen or so. Mostly 15-20 yrd range, none over 30 yrds, mostly through the ribs, a couple in the head and one was facing strait away from me. Most just floped, None went more than a couple of yards.
I talked to one guy, don't remember his name, who was camped nearby, he told me where he was hunting one morning, I mentioned I had intended to scout up the hill from his spot after morning stand the next day, he said he to go ahead and he would stay late becaused he thought I might move something by him, While I was there I spoted a armidillo, sliped over close enough and thumped it with a judo head. Later, in camp I asked if I had moved anything by him and he said "no, but you shot an armidillo up there didn't you?" He had recognised the sound of an arrow hiting an armidillo! Claude

No I haven't, I am usually inside the city limits and one of my restrictions is live trap only. I wouldn't think they would work too well on Armadillo tho...
