I have heard of some using LIL GUN to load for the 17 Fireball.

However, No one lists what load they use or start with.
Please Help

Lil Gun is not suitable for the 17 FireBall... it is a heavy pistol and very small rifle (22 Hornet)
powder.

Somewhere I have loading data for Bulls Eye powder in a 243 Winchester... it was something like 12 grains and an 85gr bullet...

... it just proves that there are a lot of stupid people loading ammo.

Why would you even want to load Lil Gun in a 17 FireBall... too much time on your hands, and nothing else to do?

Catshooter, LIL GUN is magic in the 221 Fireball, the 17 FB is the same case. Why would it not work as well?

I may be stupid, but I have probably been loading longer than you have been alive. I asked a valid question and hoped to get an intelligent answer.

Thank you very much.

While I do agree that Lil Gun is a good powder for the .221 FB the smaller bore of the 17FB calls for a slower burning powder to be most efficient. Its similar to the difference in powders for the .223 vs. a 17 Remington with the smaller bore needing slower burning powders to get top velocities. While I do not consider myself an expert on either the .221 or the 17FB I have been loading for both for about 7 years or so and to get good speeds from the 17FB you need something slower than Lil Gun.
I like XTerminator myself but have also had great results with H4198 and H322 in the 17FB.

Because the case is the same, doesn't mean anything else is the same.
Win 748 is fantastic in the 308, But just barely works(horribly low vels & groups) when used in the 243.

First - I guarantee you have not been loading longer than I have been alive. You can ask Moses!

Second - I guarantee that you, and everyone you know, altogether, has not loaded as many rounds, or as many different calibers as I have.

Third - you got an intelligent answer... "Lil Gun is not suitable for the 17 FireBall... it is a heavy pistol and very small rifle (22 Hornet) powder.".

Forth - if you have so much loading experience, then you should know the answer to it without asking.

IMR 4198 is a great powder for the 458 Winchester Magnum...
... it really sucks for the 300 Winchester Magnum. It sucks so badd that it would be dangerous to even try it.

The reason has to do with the case volume and bore size - for a given case volume, as you reduce the bore size, you MUST go to slower powders.

This is handloading 101 (for beginners). If you have so much experience, how come you don't understand the basic speed relationships between different powders???

Powders that are suitable for the 17 FireBall are in the middle burning rates - like 8208, BenchMark, 4895, H-332 (on the fast side).

But with all the many years of handloading experence you have, you knew that already, didn't you.???

So basically you haven't tried it? So you don't know? Your theorizing, making assumptions, or just plain guessing.

Cool, now that we got that figured out.

I don't think some of these guys are interested in actual experience.

Please note that this is NOT published load data. This is only useful for making comparisons between different propeelants for the application. It has been generated using QuickLOAD which plugs default values into several fields, and some of these values are critical.
Please also note that the bullet used for these calculations was the 20-grain V-Max.

Code:

Code:
Cartridge : .17 Rem Fireball
Bullet : .172, 20, Hornady V-MAX 21710
Useable Case Capaci: 19.354 grain H2O = 1.257 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 1.800 inch = 45.72 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 55114 psi, or 380 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 110 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

Thanks for the reply River Rider, This is the first time I have seen anything on paper. That is exactly what I wanted to know. and the reason why..

OH< and Catshooter, I have been loading for 53 years, for over 30 different calibers, and 4 different shotgun gauges, I guess that pales by comparison to your experience, but I still think my question was valid.

Sure thing, bigdog. If you care to see some more specific data, PM me. Let me know what bullet you're using, case capacity in grains, OAL, barrel length, and any powders you have interest in trying. With that much information I can generate some useful stuff for you. I wouldn't treat it as I might treat published data but it beats the heck out of the SWAG method. Even with published data we should ALL know we're really out there on our own anyway.

Yes, it pales!!

And my answer was valid.

Cat shooter,

There is a handy little button on your profile that says "IGNORE THIS USER" I just energized that lil puppy.

See ya later, OR NOT>

Wow, there is a lot of science in this reloading business! I'll have to just try some loads one of you with years of experimenting have already established when I start loading for my AR. All the figures are making my head spin. It looks like it took you a lot of time and expense to find your favorite loads.
